Cameron Brink, Dearica Hamby ruled out for Aces clash on lengthy Sparks injury report
Cameron Brink and Dearica Hamby popped up on the team’s injury report for their upcoming game against the Aces.
The Los Angeles Sparks have only two games remaining in the season, with one road game on Tuesday as they visit the Las Vegas Aces, and head coach Lynne Roberts wants the team finish the year strong. But like this past Sunday’s game against the Portland Fire, the Sparks are going to be short-handed as Cameron Brink, Dearica Hamby and Aaliyah Nye have all been ruled out on the injury report.
The trio did not suit up in the Sparks’ win against the Fire after initially being listed as doubtful on the team’s injury report. In addition, veteran guard Ariel Atkins is listed as probably amid an illness. Prior to the win against the Fire, Sparks’ head coach Lynne Roberts spoke about how the team’s shuffling roster is just something they’ve had to deal with this season.
“It’s been one of those years … a lot of different combinations that haven’t played together, but it is what it is,” Roberts said during her pregame press conference.
Cameron Brink has been managing an ankle injury she sustained back in June that kept her out for about one month, while Dearica Hamby’s knee issue appears to be more recent. Hamby had been an iron woman of sorts for the Sparks, playing in every single game since the team traded for her in 2023. Sunday’s game was the first she had missed in her Los Angeles career.
Nye was claimed off waives right before the FIBA break, and had just made her Sparks’ debut during the team’s loss to the Dallas Wings last Thursday. With Brink and Hamby out, the team’s frontcourt will be tested again as they go up against perennial MVP candidate A’ja Wilson.
The Sparks will most likely start veteran forward Emma Cannon, as they did against the Fire. It was her first start of the season, and she tied a season-high with 10 points to go along with two rebounds and one assist in a little over 13 minutes.
After the game against the Aces, the Sparks will return home to face off against the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday on a night where the team will honor Nneka Ogwumike in the final game of her career, as well as celebrate the anniversary of the franchise’s 2016 WNBA championship.
