Cambodia Returns Detained Thai National via Border Committee

Cambodia returned a Thai national detained after an illegal border crossing in Oddar Meanchey on May 15 following coordination with Thai border bodies.
A Thai national who illegally crossed into Cambodian territory in Oddar Meanchey province was returned to Thai authorities on May 15, following coordination between Cambodian and Thai border committees under existing bilateral mechanisms.. A statement issued by Ministry of National Defence spokesperson Maly Socheata said the man was handed over to Thai authorities at 10.59am this morning, at the Choam International Border Checkpoint in Anlong Veng district, Oddar Meanchey province.. “The individual illegally entered deep
into Cambodian territory on April 26 and was subsequently detained by Cambodian authorities,” the statement explained.. The handover was carried out through the coordination mechanism of the Cambodia-Thailand Regional Border Committee (RBC) after the Thai side requested cooperation through the Border Liaison Office mechanism on May 13.. Socheata said that following review and assessment in accordance with legal procedures, Nit Narong, secretary of the RBC for Cambodia’s Military Region 4, was assigned to transfer the
detainee to Kamphanat Waphansuk, chief of staff and secretary of the RBC for Thailand’s Military Region 2, who personally received the individual.. The defence ministry said the handover was conducted in accordance with humanitarian principles.. “During the meeting, officials from both sides also held discussions aimed at strengthening mutual trust and enhancing cooperation to prevent and counter fake and provocative information that could affect bilateral relations and border stability,” said Socheata.. Both sides reaffirmed their
commitment to the strict, full and sincere implementation of previously agreed arrangements in order to maintain long-term peace, stability and security along the Cambodia-Thailand border, according to the statement.. “The Thai side expressed appreciation to the Cambodian authorities for their full cooperation in addressing daily challenges, particularly efforts to facilitate the safe return of the Thai national who had illegally entered Cambodian territory so that he could return home and reunite with his family,” Socheata
