Caitlin Clark Fever Draws Near-Record WNBA Ratings

Caitlin Clark’s season-opening matchup drew about 2.5 million viewers across ESPN networks despite the Fever’s loss to the Wings.

Caitlin Clark’s return to the WNBA spotlight helped power a season opener that nearly matched the highest viewership mark for a game on ESPN networks.

Indiana played Dallas in its first regular-season game. a matchup that drew attention not only because of Clark’s profile. but also because the Wings came with two top overall picks.. Paige Bueckers. selected first overall last year. and Azzi Fudd. the franchise’s first pick this season. joined the spotlight as Dallas opened the campaign against the Fever.

The game itself ended in the Wings’ favor, 107-104. Bueckers scored 20 points to lead the Dallas effort, while Clark also finished with 20 points for Indiana in a loss that left the Fever unable to hold a lead or tie things up in the final stretch.

Fudd’s debut, however, was not the kind of start that fans may have hoped for. She had what the report characterized as a lackluster outing off the bench, even as the Wings still managed to secure the narrow win.

While the result was disappointing for Indiana, the league and ESPN were said to have cause for optimism from the audience numbers. The matchup reportedly drew 2.5 million viewers across ESPN networks, ranking as the second-most viewed WNBA game the networks have presented.

That figure underscores how star power and storyline convergence continue to shape interest in women’s basketball.. In this case. Clark’s presence met the intrigue surrounding Bueckers and Fudd. who were previously teammates and champions coached by Geno Auriemma at UConn.. The familiarity between the players added another layer to a game that already carried high expectations.

Clark’s own availability also played a role in the hype. She returned fully healthy for her first regular-season appearance in months, after spending a meaningful portion of the prior season on the sidelines. That absence contributed to Indiana missing a near-run to the WNBA Finals.

Ahead of the WNBA season. Clark also took part in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament. where she was reportedly named the Most Valuable Player.. Her participation helped keep her in a competitive rhythm. and her return to the Fever lineup offered fans a clearer sense of what the team could look like once she was back.

Still, the Fever did not get the start they were aiming for, and Indiana is now 0-1. The loss matters early in the standings, particularly for a team trying to rebuild momentum after falling short of last season’s postseason run.

At the same time, Indiana remains viewed as a serious contender. The report stated that the Fever are among the top four teams in odds to win the WNBA Finals, with much of that projection tied to the health of key players.

Sophie Cunningham and Clark, in particular, are central to how Indiana’s chances may change as the season progresses. The expectation is that their availability could meaningfully boost the team’s outlook after last season’s playoff effort did not materialize as hoped.

Indiana also moved to strengthen its depth.. In the WNBA Draft. the Fever selected South Carolina guard Raven Johnson in the first round. a move described as an effort to upgrade reserve options.. For a team navigating the demands of a long season. that kind of depth can become crucial when starters are managing workloads or recovering from missed time.

Clark’s popularity and the Wings’ high-profile roster will also likely keep drawing attention to future games.. In a league where audience growth and media partnerships increasingly depend on marquee matchups. the combination of Clark and top incoming talent created an early benchmark for what can be expected.

The Fever now have a chance to respond quickly. with the report indicating Indiana will visit the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday evening.. That next game arrives as Clark’s full return is now on the regular-season schedule. and as Indiana looks to convert preseason momentum into wins rather than narrow defeats.

  1. This is awesome. Clark brings eyes and the WNBA actually deserved it. Hopefully they keep scheduling more games like this.

  2. 2.5 million is cool and all but ESPN will hype anything with a name on it. The game quality is better when they stop acting like it’s a celebrity circus though.

  3. Wait Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd were teammates? I didn’t even realize. I just like watching Clark highlights lol. 107-104 sounds close at least.

  4. Kinda funny the Fever lost but still did huge ratings. Shows you how much star power matters. Also those two Wings top picks being there helped a lot, even if Fudd didn’t look great off the bench.
