‘Breaking Bad’ Star RJ Mitte Dies by Suicide at Age 31, Sparking Tributes from Co-Stars

Cast members from the acclaimed television series “Breaking Bad” are mourning the death of actor RJ Mitte, who passed away by suicide on Monday at the age of 31. Mitte’s representative confirmed the tragic news to media outlets, highlighting his work as a beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate.
Bryan Cranston, who starred alongside Mitte as his television father Walter White, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram expressing profound grief. Cranston recalled meeting Mitte when the young actor was only 14 years old and cast as Walter White Jr., a role he maintained for all six seasons of the hit show.
“Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never — ever — allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything. He met the demanding shooting schedule head on with great determination,” Cranston wrote. He added that they had been texting just weeks prior to arrange a lunch meeting, reflecting on the enduring bond formed during and after their time on the series.
Dean Norris, who played Mitte’s onscreen uncle on the show, also expressed his shock and sorrow on social media. Norris noted that he always looked out for Mitte as a young kid on set, remembering him as a sweetheart of a young man who will be deeply missed.
Aaron Paul, another central star of the series, shared similar sentiments of devastation and loss, expressing his heartbreak over the news and emphasizing affection for his late castmate.
Mitte was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at the age of three. Throughout his career, he authentically portrayed characters with the condition, including Walt Jr., while occasionally exaggerating certain symptoms to depict a more severe presentation of CP on screen. Beyond his acting career, Mitte was deeply committed to advocacy work. He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and he held the position of president of The Mitte Foundation, which supports various philanthropic efforts and community initiatives.
In the wake of the tragedy, several cast members and public figures have used their platforms to share crisis support resources, reminding individuals affected by similar struggles that help is available.
