Australian Lawmaker Helen Haines in Critical Condition After Being Struck by Car Outside Office

Independent Australian lawmaker Helen Haines is in a critical condition following an incident in which she was struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, located northeast of Melbourne, according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Victoria Police stated that the 65-year-old member of parliament was hit and pinned beneath a white Toyota Land Cruiser on Murphy Street at approximately 3:35 p.m. on Monday. A passerby intervened at the scene, detaining the driver before he was formally arrested by law enforcement.
Police identified the suspect as a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee. He was taken into custody to be interviewed regarding the incident, while investigators recovered and seized a knife discovered inside the vehicle.
Haines sustained critical injuries and was transported to a hospital for emergency medical treatment. Prime Minister Albanese addressed reporters following the event, expressing solidarity with the injured lawmaker and her supporters.

“All of our thoughts are with Helen, her family, her friends, her team, and her community at this extremely difficult time. We are praying for her full recovery,” Albanese said during a news conference.
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the general public, though Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives were dispatched to examine the scene.
Investigators are examining whether the collision was an intentional act, and authorities have yet to establish whether Haines and the suspect were known to each other.
In response to the incident, federal and state security apparatuses have mobilized. Albanese confirmed that the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police, and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation are collaborating on the case, and the Joint Counter Terrorism Team has been activated. Officials emphasized that a definitive motive has not yet been determined as inquiries continue.
