BOTEPCO rallies media ahead of AFTRA education summit

Misryoum reports BOTEPCO briefs media on Botswana’s readiness to host the AFTRA education conference in Gaborone.

A high-level education summit in Gaborone is already pulling the spotlight onto Botswana, after BOTEPCO brought the media together to outline how the event will unfold.

At a press briefing held on April 30, 2026, Misryoum reports that BOTEPCO officials said Botswana is ready to host the AFTRA gathering running May 5–8 at the Gaborone International Convention Centre.. The briefing was aimed at aligning journalists, stakeholders, and partners around what organisers described as a significant moment for the education sector and for broader continental conversation.

BOTEPCO Registrar Dr Raphael Dingalo framed AFTRA as a platform focused on strengthening teacher regulation and professional standards, while encouraging collaboration across African countries.. He said the 2026 conference will be held under the theme “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession: Implications for Africa.”

Insight: When organisers invest in early media coordination, it often makes a difference in how clearly the public understands the goals of a policy-focused conference.

Presentations shared during the session indicated that interest in the conference has reached beyond Botswana, with countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia, and Namibia mentioned as having shown involvement.. International organisations, including the African Union and UNESCO, were also cited as part of the wider engagement.

Dr Dingalo said Botswana is on track for a successful event, pointing to institutional coordination and logistical preparedness.. He added that the summit is expected to support education systems across Africa through knowledge exchange and policy dialogue, with organisers positioning AFTRA as a route for sharing best practices and advancing the teaching profession continentwide.

Insight: Conferences like this matter because they can turn shared challenges in education into practical, coordinated steps rather than isolated national discussions.

BOTEPCO Manager for Corporate Affairs Mercy Rebaone Thebe outlined elements of the programme, including ministerial sessions, technical discussions, exhibitions, awards, and cultural activities.. She confirmed that a media engagement plan has been finalised to support consistent coverage before, during, and after the conference.

Thebe also said a media conference pack will be distributed to help reporters deliver accurate coverage, while also highlighting sponsorship opportunities for organisations looking to participate.. She noted that the first day will feature leadership from the education minister, where policymakers from across Africa are expected to deliberate on issues affecting the teaching profession.

Insight: The production of a ministerial declaration, even when viewed as procedural, can signal which education priorities are gaining alignment across countries.

BOTEPCO Director of Corporate Affairs Ntsholeng Thabana thanked the media for continued support, emphasising that partnerships are key to amplifying developments in the education sector.. Organisers said the AFTRA Conference and Roundtable is expected to draw ministers, regulators, education leaders, and development partners from across the continent and beyond.

Looking ahead, officials said the event is not only intended to strengthen teacher professionalism, but also to boost Botswana’s profile as a hub for knowledge exchange and international conferences.. Beyond education, Misryoum reports that organisers anticipate broader economic activity, including increased interest in hospitality and business events sectors, as suggested in the briefing.

Insight: A “world-class and transformative” conference pitch is more than a slogan, especially when it aligns education goals with local economic activity and international visibility.
