Boston Legacy FC kept its unbeaten run alive Friday night, even as the match tightened after a 41st-minute red card left the expansion club playing the second half with 10 players.
For the fourth straight game, Boston conceded the opening goal at Bay FC, but Amanda Gutierres answered in the second half to secure a 1-1 tie at San Jose, Calif. The result stretched Boston’s unbeaten streak to five games, improving its run to 2-0-3 after beginning the season 0-5.
The night was difficult from the start.. Bay controlled much of the game despite Boston’s adjustments. holding a 19-8 edge in shot attempts and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.. Bay also hadn’t played since Sunday. while Boston came in for a third match in six days. leaving the visitors mostly defending for stretches.
Bay took the lead in the 51st minute when Dorian Bailey scored. Bailey worked a quick give-and-go with Karlie Lema, took a touch wide to her left, and slid a shot toward the far post.
Boston’s comeback chance arrived after a foul in the middle of the box. Bay goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz conceded a penalty kick when she fouled Aïssata Traoré as Traoré tried to redirect a cross from Nichelle Prince.
Gutierres stepped in for the penalty midway through the second half and sent Silkowitz the wrong way. leveling the score to 1-1.. It was a finish that came after a week of pressure on Legacy’s offense—Gutierres had earlier posted the best opportunity during the run of play. shooting off the top of the crossbar after Prince delivered the cross.
Boston goalkeeper Casey Murphy helped preserve the tie, making eight saves, including one in stoppage time. That late stop ensured Boston left California with something to show from its cross-country trip.
Gutierres’ touch also echoed recent results: her stoppage-time penalty Tuesday night had delivered a victory over Orlando.
The pattern is clear through Boston’s recent stretch: the club has conceded the opening goal for four straight games, yet each time it has managed to get a result, whether through penalties that swing the score and saves that protect the late moments.
After the draw, the Legacy are off for a week before playing May 22 against the Seattle Reign. That match begins the first of seven scheduled dates at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I.
Boston’s record after Friday night moved to 2-5-3, 9 points, while Bay improved to 3-3-2, 11 points.
