Bluesky blames DDoS attack as outages roll on

Bluesky is once again having a wobble. The platform says some of its systems are down and that it’s “investigating an incident with service in one of our reginos” — yes, that typo is in the original wording, and no, it’s not something you usually expect from a company trying to look crisp.
The trouble appears to have started at 1:42AM ET. As of 11AM, the issue was still persisting, and over the day users saw intermittent interruptions—sometimes even when they tried checking the status page that’s supposed to help them understand what’s going wrong. For most platforms, a broken status page is the kind of small detail people notice instantly. It feels a little like hearing a smoke alarm fail to stop beeping.
Later, at 7:47PM ET, Bluesky said it’s been working to mitigate “a sophisticated Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, which intensified throughout the day.” The wording matters here: it wasn’t framed as a quick technical hiccup, but as something that kept building pressure rather than disappearing. According to the platform, the attack led to interruptions affecting users’ feeds, notifications, threads and search—basically the places you notice first when a social network gets hit.
And sure, DDoS attacks are sometimes used as a smokescreen. It’s a common pattern: flood the service, keep people busy watching the wrong door, then sneak in elsewhere. Bluesky says it has “not seen any evidence of unauthorized access to private user data.” That claim is doing a lot of work, as you’d expect, but it also sets the boundary for what users should be worried about right now—service reliability versus data compromise.
The outages have been described as ongoing, but because they come and go, Bluesky is treating it more like a rolling blackout than a full shutdown. If you’ve ever tried to refresh a page during an incident, you know the experience: one moment it loads, next moment it doesn’t, then it half-loads again. It’s that frustrating middle ground where you can’t tell whether it’s your device or the service.
Misryoum newsroom reported the platform would provide another update by 1PM ET on April 17. And yes, there’s also the context that Bluesky had another brief outage earlier this month. The repetition makes the current incident feel less like a one-off, and more like something the platform is still wrestling with, even if the details keep shifting as the day goes on.
