In Detroit, the Toronto Blue Jays delivered a stark update on the health of Jose Berríos, with manager John Schneider telling reporters Saturday that the 31-year-old will undergo elbow surgery on Wednesday with Dr. Keith Meister to repair the existing stress fracture.
The team is also weighing concerns about the ligament in his elbow, and Berríos’ future beyond this point depends on whether the ligament needs to be repaired during surgery. The question isn’t just about recovery time, but whether the intervention ultimately leaves him available for the season.
Berríos began the season on the injured list with a stress fracture.. He appeared healthy heading into spring training. but during a physical as he worked toward joining Team Puerto Rico at the World Baseball Classic. an MRI surfaced elbow inflammation.. The stress fracture diagnosis came after he met with Dr.. Meister in Texas.
He returned to action and logged four minor-league rehab starts. After his final rehab start with triple-A Buffalo on May 3, elbow inflammation returned again, setting up another meeting with Dr. Meister and the decision for Wednesday’s operation.
The rehab outing didn’t provide much reassurance. In that appearance, Berríos struggled, posting a 10.67 ERA over 14.1 innings.
Still, the spring had offered a brief counterpoint. Berríos made two starts for the Blue Jays during spring training, including a four-inning shutout against the New York Yankees.
The Blue Jays’ medical situation is also separate from the problem that sidelined him at the end of last season. Berríos threw 166 innings in 2025, finishing with a 4.17 ERA across 31 appearances and 30 starts.
At the close of 2024, he was placed on the IL on Sept.. 25 with right elbow inflammation.. It was the first time in his MLB career that he’d missed time due to injury. and he didn’t return for Toronto’s run to the World Series.. That IL stint also helped limit his workload: the fewest starts and innings he’d recorded in a full season since 2017.. In six of the previous seven seasons, he made exactly 32 starts, with the only exception being the shortened 2020 campaign.
What makes Wednesday’s decision especially tense is the sequence laid out by Toronto’s own timeline: after the spring physical exposed inflammation via MRI. the stress fracture was addressed after meeting Dr.. Meister in Texas. then Berríos returned for four minor-league rehab starts—only for inflammation to reappear after his May 3 outing with triple-A Buffalo. leading again to Meister and now surgery that also brings ligament concerns into the picture.
