Prime Video’s Off Campus focuses on Hannah Wells and Garrett Graham, but readers of Elle Kennedy’s books are watching closely for Beau Maxwell’s storyline. In The Score, Beau’s presence grows—and his life ends in a deadly car accident after a Wisconsin visit.
Beau Maxwell may not be the headline character in Prime Video’s Off Campus TV adaptation. but fans of Elle Kennedy’s original novels keep circling back to him.. The show centers on the fake-turned-real romance between Hannah Wells (Ella Bright). a talented music major at Briar University. and Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli). the school’s hockey team captain.. Still. Beau’s fate in the books is hard to ignore—especially because the series already hints he’s more than a throwaway name.
In Kennedy’s book The Deal. Beau is introduced as a college quarterback. a history major. and the kind of guy who seems to have everything: charm. looks. and the skills to match.. He doesn’t carry the same weight right away in book 2, The Mistake, where he has a minor role.. But by book 3, The Score, Beau’s presence becomes much more prominent within the Briar University friend group.
That shift matters, because it leads into one of the series’ most devastating developments on the page.. In The Score. Beau’s childhood friendship with Dean DeLaurentis becomes integral to the story. and Beau’s tragic fate unravels from there.. Beau dies, and Dean’s depression takes over afterward as he surrenders to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain.
For the TV adaptation, Kennedy has already weighed in on how much Beau might show up on screen.. In May 2026. she told Us Weekly that season 1 offers “a little taste of Beau. ” adding that he “does [fill] the screen a little.” She also praised actor Khobe Clarke’s performance. saying. “I think that Khobe. he’s such a great actor. and he’s the sweetest guy. ” while noting he had “a lot of the little comedic bits in the season.”
In the books, Beau’s death is tied to a specific chain of events.. In The Score, he dies in a car accident after visiting his grandma in Wisconsin.. Beau’s father is the driver; he swerves to avoid hitting a deer that suddenly sprints in front of their car.. The vehicle hits black ice on the road and slams into a tree.. Beau is killed instantly after his neck snaps upon impact, while his father survives.
That’s the part fans are trying to map to the screen: season 1 is described as giving only “a little taste of Beau. ” while the later book entry. The Score. is where Beau’s role grows and where the friendship with Dean DeLaurentis leads directly into his death.. From there. the knock-on effect in the novels—Dean’s depression and his turn to drugs and alcohol—appears only after Beau’s accident.
