Barack Obama Condemns Federal Investigation and Home Raid Targeting Rep. Ilhan Omar

Former President Barack Obama has issued a forceful denunciation of the Trump administration’s legal pursuit of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, condemning a recent federal raid on her Washington home as a betrayal of American values and a transparent effort at political intimidation.

The Department of Justice investigation centers on whether Omar or her late father provided false information on immigration paperwork 26 years ago. Federal agents raided Omar’s home on a Monday, seizing her phone as part of an inquiry aimed at building a case to strip her of her U.S. citizenship and ultimately deport her, according to reports.

Omar arrived in the United States from Somalia as a child in 1995. She attained citizenship through her father’s naturalization in 2000, at which point records indicate she was 17 years old. Investigators are currently examining whether she was actually a year older, which would affect her automatic eligibility for citizenship at the time.

This line of inquiry is not entirely new. During the first Trump administration in 2019, officials reviewed similar allegations regarding her birth date and her father’s immigration records but ultimately found insufficient evidence to pursue a full investigation. The allegations originally gained wider traction through viral claims on social media.

Obama, who frequently remains selective about when he weighs in on current political issues or the sitting president, chose to speak out directly on the matter. His intervention carries a distinct historical resonance, given that he spent years facing false “birther” claims from Donald Trump regarding his own American citizenship.

In a statement exceeding 400 words published on the social media platform X, Obama warned that the full weight of the federal government is being brought down on an elected official simply for criticizing the president. He argued that such actions should outrage all Americans regardless of their political views on Omar.

“Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same,” Obama wrote. He added that while past politically charged prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for lacking a basis in law, the process still inflicts severe personal and professional costs by piling up legal bills and forcing lawmakers to fight unsubstantiated charges instead of serving their constituents.

Omar has consistently denounced the investigation as a baseless witch hunt designed to intimidate one of the administration’s fiercest congressional critics. Democratic lawmakers have similarly characterized the inquiry as a blatant abuse of power, noting the heightened sensitivity of the timing just weeks before an election.

Meanwhile, the legal pressure extends beyond immigration paperwork. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that her office is also investigating Omar’s financial disclosures. This financial probe comes despite a congressional watchdog’s recommendation last month to dismiss allegations of misconduct related to those same filings.
