Australian Barber Hailed as Hero After Detaining Driver in Alleged Attack on MP Helen Haines

An Australian barber is being praised across the country for his quick actions after he rushed out of his shop to detain a driver who authorities allege deliberately struck independent lawmaker Helen Haines with a car in regional Victoria. The incident, which unfolded on Monday in the small town of Wangaratta, has left the 65-year-old parliamentarian in critical condition following overnight surgery. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and local residents have commended the intervention of the store owner, whose shop sits directly next door to Haines’ electorate office.
Ricky Jefferies had just finished cutting the hair of a young family on Monday afternoon when he heard a loud bang outside his storefront. Realizing that the driver of a Toyota LandCruiser had struck Haines while she was reportedly handling items near the trunk of her car, Jefferies immediately went to investigate. The lawmaker, a former midwife serving as the independent member for Indi, was severely injured in the impact.

Recounting the moments after the crash to reporters on Tuesday, Jefferies described a chaotic scene. He ran out to assist the well-respected local representative and quickly took decisive action against the motorist. Spotting a weapon, Jefferies reached into the suspect’s pocket, retrieved a knife, and discarded it before pulling the driver from the vehicle. He noted that while the man possessed the knife, he did not draw it during the encounter, though Jefferies remained uneasy about his movements.
Once the driver was removed from the vehicle, Jefferies pinned him to the ground until law enforcement officers arrived at the scene. He recalled leaning over the man and ensuring he stayed put once the immediate danger had passed, telling him that he was not permitted to leave. Despite widespread praise for his bravery, Jefferies downplayed his actions, telling reporters that he did not view himself as a hero but merely as someone who seized an opportunity to intervene safely.
Haines was airlifted to a hospital following the incident, where she underwent emergency surgery overnight. Officials confirmed she remains in a critical condition. Prime Minister Albanese lauded Jefferies during an appearance on the Nine network’s “Today” show, describing him as a Good Samaritan who put himself at potential risk to defend a community figure during a dark and terrible time.
Authorities have launched a multi-agency investigation into the crash, which occurred roughly a three-hour drive northeast of Melbourne. According to early statements from the prime minister, the driver—identified as a 43-year-old man—reportedly performed a U-turn before striking Haines outside her electorate office. Counterterrorism authorities are participating in the ongoing probe, a development that has heightened concerns over potential political violence in a nation where such targeted attacks are exceedingly rare. Police have not yet released a definitive motive for the alleged incident, as community members begin leaving floral tributes outside the lawmaker’s local office.
