Arsenal Title Bid Marred by London Stadium Stair Incident

Arsenal West – Arsenal beat West Ham with a late Leandro Trossard strike, but a viral stadium incident and a VAR-disallowed late goal spark uproar.
A late Arsenal winner at the London Stadium was overshadowed by chaotic scenes off the pitch after a visiting fan was allegedly thrown down stadium steps.
Arsenal’s Premier League title push took another major step forward on Sunday afternoon against West Ham. with the Gunners closing in on a first league crown in 22 years.. Leandro Trossard delivered the deciding moment late in the contest. leaving Mikel Arteta’s side celebrating while momentum builds toward the final weeks.
To make the win even sweeter. around 3. 000 Arsenal supporters watched from the away end. and the club’s travelling group enjoyed the result from within their designated area.. But footage that has since gone viral on social media appears to show some away supporters moving into home sections. leading to tension in and around the stands.
The video depicts a male spectator being thrown down a flight of stairs in the upper levels, while a number of angry fans chase after him. The incident has reignited concerns about crowd control and safe segregation between supporters in high-stakes fixtures.
Across English football, stadium regulations typically include strict rules against supporters purchasing tickets in opposing ends, largely because authorities believe it reduces opportunities for violence and confrontation. In this case, the authorities moved quickly after the match.
The Met Police said four people were arrested at the London Stadium on Sunday. 10 May. following the West Ham vs Arsenal fixture.. Two men. aged 48 and 36. were taken into custody on suspicion of affray and assault. while a teenage boy was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault.. All were held as inquiries continued, and police indicated they are working with the football club.
Alongside those arrests, another man aged 31 was also arrested for possession of a Class B substance. West Ham were contacted for comment as enquiries into the incidents remained ongoing.
While the off-field footage drew attention, the match itself also ended in controversy. West Ham believed they had rescued a late equaliser in stoppage time when Callum Wilson looked to have scored, but VAR intervened after a lengthy delay in the build-up.
The goal was disallowed because Pablo was judged to have fouled David Raya. with the referee’s review concluding that Pablo had his arm across Raya’s chest and impeded the goalkeeper from catching or parrying the ball away.. VAR official Darren England spent several minutes on replays before Chris Kavanagh was sent to review it further. prolonging the moment and fueling arguments from the stands.
For Arsenal, the decision allowed them to see the game out and claim the three points. The win leaves them opening up a five-point lead over Pep Guardiola’s side, keeping the title race largely in their control as the season nears its decisive phase.
However, the ruling sparked sharp criticism from across the game.. Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel said the decision was “so wrong on so many levels. ” questioning why it was treated as a free kick when similar incidents had not appeared to receive that outcome earlier in the season.. He also argued that if Arsenal were to finish level, this call could carry huge consequences for the league race.
Schmeichel pointed to the nature of delays and the time spent reviewing the incident, suggesting the process itself created doubt over the final outcome. He also said it did not feel consistent with the way similar events had been handled elsewhere in the campaign.
Arsenal’s next requirement is straightforward: they must beat Burnley at home and then secure results against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park to clinch top spot. Those fixtures loom as the Gunners aim to turn their current advantage into the Premier League’s ultimate prize.
For West Ham, the controversy added to a more anxious moment in the table. The Hammers remain in the fight against the drop, sitting a point behind Tottenham, who have played one match more, meaning their margin for error is tight as the stakes increase.
After the final whistle, West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen vented frustration about the length of the VAR delay and the overturn. He argued that when decisions go against West Ham, it can feel especially harsh because goalkeepers are protected more than outfield players.
Bowen said contact is an expected part of tussles in the box and that refereeing consistency matters. He suggested that if the league revisits every match, examples of goalkeepers being fouled without similar decisions will likely be found, and he questioned why the call went one way this time.
In the end. Arsenal’s late strike secured the points. but the day will be remembered for more than a three-point swing.. Between the viral stair incident and the VAR-disallowed late equaliser. Sunday’s London derby served as a reminder of how quickly sporting tension can spill beyond the technical battle on the pitch.
