Araghchi Holds China Talks in Beijing as Hormuz Tensions Persist

Iran’s Araghchi meets China’s Wang Yi in Beijing as US-Iran tensions and Strait of Hormuz concerns stay in focus.

A tense backdrop is shaping Iran’s diplomacy in Beijing, where Abbas Araghchi has met China’s top diplomat Wang Yi amid ongoing strains with the United States.

Araghchi arrived in Beijing for a one-day set of talks with Wang Yi, according to Misryoum. The meeting comes about a week before US President Donald Trump is scheduled to travel to China for a summit with President Xi Jinping on May 14 and 15.

Misryoum reports that China’s state-linked media said the Araghchi-Wang meeting began, without additional specifics on what was covered first.. The encounter is notable because it follows a period of closer US-Iran hostility, and it marks a rare face-to-face trip by Araghchi to China during that period.

This matters because Beijing has increasingly been balancing its role as a close partner to Tehran while also managing its broader relationship with Washington, especially as sensitive waterways like the Strait of Hormuz remain central to global trade.

In the United States, Misryoum notes that the Secretary of State signaled expectations that China would reiterate the need for Iran to release what was described as its chokehold over the Strait of Hormuz.. The strait is widely seen as a critical route for energy supplies, and Iran’s closure of it after the latest escalation has heightened worries about market disruption.

Meanwhile, Misryoum reports that after a ceasefire was reached in April, the US introduced its own measures targeting Iranian ports as leverage in peace efforts mediated by Pakistan. Those efforts include demands tied to Iran’s nuclear program, including the halt of all nuclear enrichment.

Within that wider context, Araghchi and Wang are expected to focus on two overlapping priorities: sustaining the ceasefire and addressing the question of reopening the Strait of Hormuz.. Misryoum also indicates that China’s stance has drawn attention, including criticism of the US’s naval blockade on Iranian ports while also raising concerns about Iran’s repeated closures of the chokepoint.

Araghchi is reportedly seeking clarity on what China will bring to the table as Xi meets Trump, including whether Beijing might make any moves that could leave Tehran uncomfortable.. China, in turn, is understood to want assurances from Iran against any escalatory steps or sudden actions ahead of that high-level meeting.

This matters because the weeks leading to Xi-Trump talks can act like a pressure test for both sides, shaping how far each government is willing to adjust its position without losing leverage.

The meeting also overlaps with fresh developments in the region.. Misryoum reports that Trump announced a pause in a US military operation connected to ships affected by the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, even as the US claimed the operation faced interference from Iranian boats.. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates reported missile and drone attacks from Iran, accusations Tehran denies.

In this round of diplomacy, the heart of the agenda appears to be control versus reopening, and guarantees versus concessions, with Araghchi and Wang effectively trying to align expectations ahead of bigger US-China engagement.
