Allen vs. Costa: Featherweight Gatekeeper Clash at UFC Fight Night

Arnold Allen and Melquizael Costa headline UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas as key featherweight contenders chase title momentum.
A high-stakes featherweight matchup with title-pulse implications takes center stage this Saturday, with Arnold Allen and Melquizael Costa set to headline UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas—and the winner is likely to reshape the division’s pecking order.
The five-round main event at the UFC’s Meta Apex pits England’s Arnold Allen (ranked No. 7) against Brazil’s Melquizael Costa (ranked No. 12). It’s a classic “close the gap” fight in a weight class where the rankings move quickly when contenders can turn momentum into marquee wins.
Allen’s position in the top tier has been steady for years. but progress into the very top of the division has been limited.. Entering this weekend, he has lost decisions in three of his past four appearances.. Costa. meanwhile. has been accelerating through the ladder. winning six straight inside the UFC and stopping both of his most recent opponents in the opening round.
This bout also arrives at a particularly active moment for featherweight contenders. The event marks the fifth UFC main card so far this year featuring featherweights as the final fight of the night, underlining how central the 145-pound picture has been to the sport’s current title conversation.
The current championship landscape is also part of the backdrop.. Reigning titleholder Alexander Volkanovski defended his belt with a five-round unanimous decision over Diego Lopes 3.5 months ago in Australia.. That win was the second unanimous decision victory Volkanovski has recorded against Lopes within a 10-month span. emphasizing how tightly contested the elite tier remains at the top.
While Volkanovski’s next challenger has not been confirmed yet. the path to that spot has been forming through other standout results.. Kevin Vallejos made an immediate statement in his first UFC main event. blasting veteran Josh Emmett within one round in mid-March.. Vallejos climbed to No.. 10 in the rankings. and the report suggests that if his momentum continues. he could find himself in title contention potentially as early as the end of the year.
Another key marker came one week later when Movsar Evloev further reinforced his status as the No.. 1-ranked contender.. Evloev stayed unbeaten while handing Lerone Murphy the first loss of his UFC career in a de facto title eliminator.. The report notes that Evloev hadn’t fought for 15 months. but after improving to 20-0. he has been viewed as presumptively next in line for Volkanovski—though the UFC has still not made an official selection.
Featherweight momentum has also carried into the division from fighters adapting across weight classes.. Aljamain Sterling. after moving up to 145 pounds. continued his strong run with an impressive performance that snapped Youssef Zalal’s eight-fight winning streak.. Sterling’s only loss since stepping up has been a tightly fought three-round decision to Evloev in December 2024. and he believes he did enough to win that fight.
Not everything that matters in 145 pounds has happened in headline roles.. The report points to other notable featherweight developments during the year. including Aaron Pico securing his first UFC victory when he topped former Bellator rival Patrício Pitbull on the UFC 327 prelims.. It also highlights several up-and-coming names—Lerryan Douglas. Luke Riley. Marcio Barbosa. and Marwan Rahiki—who have picked up signature wins earlier this year and are expected to stay on the radar through the second half of the season.
The matchup takes on added meaning when viewed through the lens of recent form and past timing.. Allen’s current ranking status reflects longevity, but his momentum was disrupted in 2026’s early movement in the featherweight rankings.. The report states that Jean Silva won a three-round decision over Allen at UFC 324 in late January. leapfrogging the Brit in the rankings.. Silva’s only UFC loss came to Lopes last September, which helps explain why that result still resonates.
Allen’s last loss also comes with context: the report notes that it was his first fight since a win over Giga Chikadze in the summer of 2024. a victory that snapped a two-fight skid.. That skid had included a five-round decision loss to former champion Max Holloway in 2023 and a close three-round decision defeat to Evloev in early January of 2024.. Allen has also discussed previously contemplating a move to lightweight. but the report emphasizes that the move to 155 has not materialized.
Costa, at 29, has built his case more explosively in recent cycles.. The report highlights that after a perfect 4-0 run in 2025. he became the first fighter to stop divisional stalwart Dan Ige. landing a spinning back kick for a technical knockout at UFC Houston in February.. That kind of finish is precisely what can separate “top-10” from “top-five” in the rankings race.
The event’s featherweight story isn’t limited to this headline. Besides Allen vs. Costa, the only other matchup featuring ranked featherweights set on the card slate involves Diego Lopes at UFC Freedom 250 next month, where he is scheduled to face No. 9-ranked Steve Garcia at the White House.
Because of that limited set of ranked matchups, the report suggests that a memorable result this weekend—particularly a knockout or submission designed to leave no doubt—could keep the winner near the top of the division and positioned for a top-five opponent later in the year.
For betting markets, Allen is viewed as slightly safer despite the differing styles and recent outcomes. Mid-week BetMGM odds listed Allen around -160 and Costa around +140, a line the report presents as reflective of Allen’s stronger overall profile and proven strength of schedule.
Costa has framed his own plan with confidence. In comments attributed to UFC.com this week, he called himself the most dangerous fighter in the division and said people will “realize” that this Saturday after he knocks out Allen.
The co-main event adds another layer to the featherweight night with Dooho Choi vs.. Daniel Santos.. The report states that Choi is unbeaten in his past three fights, but hasn’t competed since December 2024.. Santos, by contrast, is riding a four-fight win streak.. Their scheduled meeting was originally set for September but was postponed after Choi sustained a knee injury.
Beyond the headlining bouts, the event still includes ranked matchups on the prelims.. In women’s bantamweight, Brazil’s Ketlen Vieira takes on Portugal’s Jacqueline Cavalcanti.. Vieira. 34. is a seasoned 14-fight UFC veteran who has wins over former 135-pound champions Holly Holm and Miesha Tate. but the report notes she has alternated wins and losses in recent years and is coming off a split decision loss to Norma Dumont in November.. Cavalcanti. 28. enters with a 10-1 record and a perfect 5-0 UFC run. and the report lists Vieira as the underdog against the No.. 11-ranked Cavalcanti, despite Vieira being ranked No.. 5.
In addition to the fight matchups, the card has undergone multiple late adjustments.. The organization removed Trey Ogden from his lightweight bout against Thomas Gantt due to injury. replacing him with 7-0 UFC newcomer Artur Minev.. Another change saw Rodolfo Bellato replaced by newcomer Christian Edwards, who will face Modestas Bukauskas in a 215-pound catchweight.. A separate bout between Nicolas Dalby and Jeremiah Wells was cancelled because of an injury on Dalby’s side.
The reshuffling also underlines how volatile fight cards can be just days before the walkouts.. With replacements now involved. matchups can shift in style and preparation requirements—especially when newcomers are stepping in on short notice. making the opening rounds a potential swing point for deciding who can control the pace.
Meanwhile, the broader featherweight picture continues to hinge on efficiency and statement performances.. In a division where Volkanovski’s next opponent is still unconfirmed, fights like Allen vs.. Costa become more than a single result: they are part of an ongoing sorting process that determines who earns the attention of the title chase.
The night’s 13-bout slate is projected as follows, subject to change: Arnold Allen vs.. Melquizael Costa; Dooho Choi vs.. Daniel Santos; Malcolm Wellmaker vs.. Juan Díaz; Modestas Bukauskas vs.. Christian Edwards; Timothy Cuamba vs.. Bernardo Sopaj; Nikolay Veretennikov vs.. Khaos Williams; Tuco Tokkos vs.. Ivan Erslan; Thomas Gantt vs.. Artur Minev; Ketlen Vieira vs.. Jacqueline Cavalcanti; Cody Brundage vs.. Andre Petroski; Alice Ardelean vs.. Polyana Viana; Daniel Barez vs.. Luis Gurule; Shauna Bannon vs.. Nicolle Caliari.
UFC Fight Night: Allen vs.. Costa will take place Saturday, May 16 at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas, with coverage beginning at 6 p.m.. ET / 3 p.m.. PT on Sportsnet 360 and Sportsnet+—and it promises to deliver exactly what this division has been craving lately: a result that could quickly move the winner into title conversation territory.

Allen better not gas again.
I feel like Costa is gonna win just because he’s been stopping people early?? Like if it’s always round 1 then yeah. But idk the article says Allen is No. 7 so shouldn’t that mean he’s the better guy?
Five rounds sounds brutal, especially with all that talk about momentum and pecking order. Half the time rankings don’t even matter, UFC just picks whoever they want for the title next, right? Also “Allen lost decisions” like that’s some kind of bad sign… but decisions are usually closer? Confusing.
Costa winning six straight and stopping people in the first round is wild, like that’s instantly gonna mess up the whole division. I don’t even know these guys, but Brazil fighter always has that pressure, so I’m leaning Costa. Meta Apex though?? Isn’t that like the streaming thing not the actual arena? Vegas fights always get weird with the production.
