If the No. 8-seeded Shelton wins, he will become the first U.S. man to win a major title since Andy Roddick in 2003. He would also become the first American Black man to win the US Open since Arthur Ashe in 1968.
Shelton’s journey to the finals has been thrilling. He knocked out reigning US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in a quarterfinals match that lasted a marathon, 4 1/2 hours and did not end until 3:33 a.m. on Wednesday.
He advanced to the championship match with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 win over Frances Tiafoe in an All-American semifinal showdown on Friday.
Today’s match marks the sixth meeting between Zverev and Shelton, with Zverev winning all five contests.
