Alexander Bublik Smashes Racket, Injures Hand, and Still Wins at Shanghai Masters

Alexander Bublik experienced a dramatic reversal of fortune at the Shanghai Masters, recovering from a violent racket-smashing incident and a self-inflicted hand injury to secure a hard-fought victory over Brandon Nakashima.
The volatile third-round match took a chaotic turn at the end of the opening set. Bublik carved out two set points but failed to convert either, allowing Nakashima to seize control. The opening set culminated in a 9-7 tie-break loss for Bublik, sealed when Nakashima fired a decisive backhand winner down the line. Frustrated by missed opportunities, Bublik had already directed angry comments toward his coaching team.
Upon dropping the tie-break, Bublik’s frustration boiled over entirely. He repeatedly slammed his racket against the ground five times, completely pulverizing the equipment. As he walked toward his player chair for the changeover, he kicked the destroyed frame before striking his hand through the lid of a drinks cooler, sustaining a physical injury in the process.
Chair umpire John Blom promptly issued a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct. Meanwhile, broadcasting commentators on Sky Sports noted the total destruction of the equipment on air.
Compounding his troubles, the impact on the drinks cooler left Bublik’s hand bleeding. He initially attempted to stem the blood by covering the injury with a towel before notifying the umpire that medical attention was required. The player was granted a three-minute medical time-out to treat the wound.
Despite the self-inflicted setback and physical discomfort, Bublik managed to regain his composure once play resumed. He successfully held his serve at the opening of the second set, turning the momentum of the encounter around. Bublik ultimately outlasted his opponent over three grueling sets, completing a remarkable comeback with a final score of 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.
