Aaron Carter Estate Settlement Reached in Wrongful Death Case

A wrongful death lawsuit tied to Aaron Carter’s death has reached a confidential settlement with one psychiatrist and one mental health clinic.

Aaron Carter’s estate has reportedly reached a confidential settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit, bringing a new development to a case that has been tied to claims about medication and medical oversight.

The lawsuit was filed by Aaron’s ex-fiancée. Melanie Martin. on behalf of their son. Princeton Lyric Carter. in October 2023.. The complaint alleged that Aaron’s drowning death was set in motion by a range of medical-related defendants. including doctors. dentists. mental health clinics. and pharmacies that. according to the filing. prescribed him multiple medications.

New court documents reportedly obtained in connection with the matter indicate that a psychiatrist and a mental health clinic named in the lawsuit reached a confidential financial settlement in April. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed, and the settlement is described as confidential.

At the heart of the original allegations was the claim that Aaron was prescribed Hydrocodone. Oxycodone. and Alprazolam without medical justification.. The lawsuit further asserted that the prescriptions were made despite knowledge of Aaron’s “mental health and psychiatric condition. ” arguing that the combination of drugs and quantities—along with his psychiatric history—should have raised concerns for the professionals involved.

Aaron died in November 2022, when his housekeeper found him unresponsive in his bathtub. The official cause of death was reported as Xanax and huffing that led to drowning, a determination that has remained central to how the case is understood and disputed.

While the reported settlement covers the psychiatrist and mental health clinic. other defendants named in the original lawsuit were also identified in the filings as still facing the claims.. Walgreens. a Santa Monica dentist. and a Santa Monica pharmacy were included as defendants in the original action. and it does not appear they have settled the case yet.

For Martin. the filing marked a legal effort to challenge how Aaron’s care and prescriptions were handled. especially given the psychiatric context the complaint emphasized.. The reported April settlement with part of the medical defendants suggests that at least some parties were willing to resolve their exposure privately. even as the broader case remains unresolved.

In the wider context of celebrity-related litigation. partial settlements like this can shape the pace of a case—sometimes narrowing disputes and focusing attention on remaining defendants.. Here. it also leaves open what happens next with the pharmacy and dental providers that were named. as the lawsuit continues to move through the courts.

As the wrongful death claims continue to play out. the case remains closely tied to questions about medication prescribing practices and whether warning signs should have been recognized.. With the estate’s case now including at least one confidential resolution. the next steps will likely center on how the surviving defendants respond and what evidence and arguments remain in play.
