A.J. Brown Deal May Block Diggs Patriots Reunion Plans

League interest in a Stefon Diggs reunion with the New England Patriots is reportedly being held back by an expected A.J. Brown trade and the salary implications that would follow.
Stefon Diggs’s social media activity has fans watching the Patriots’ offseason for signs of a reunion.. Diggs posted during the Patriots season. and he also drew attention with an Instagram message that doubled as both reminder and pitch: “This is not an opinion-based sport. so here are the numbers.. I played 52% of the snaps and finished with 85 catches for 1,045 yards coming off an ACL.”
But in league circles, the idea of Diggs returning to Foxborough for 2026 is still described as unlikely—largely because of what’s being expected on the other end of the receiver market.
In a mailbag update, Albert Breer said Diggs has “a real interest in re-signing in New England,” and that the Patriots “love Diggs.” Still, Breer wrote that the key question is whether a trade for A.J. Brown happens first.
“I do think an A.J.. Brown trade will happen.. I also don’t think, for a variety of reasons, you’ll see Diggs and A.J.. Brown together in New England,” Breer wrote.. “Now, I believe the Patriots love Diggs, and Diggs would love to return.. But any realistic talk about his return, to me, hinges on whether the Brown trade happens.”
Breer also tied the timing and roster math to financial specifics. He noted that the Patriots wouldn’t be stepping up to add another large receiver contract on top of what’s expected if Brown lands in New England.
The reason: Brown’s cap hit and how much of it the Patriots would take on in a trade.. New England would be responsible for the majority of Brown’s salary in the deal. which helped keep trade talks from moving until June 1.. Under Breer’s framework. that would leave New England on the books for Brown’s $32 million AAV contract. while also paying the $68 million for Romeo Doubs over the next four years after acquiring him.
Given those numbers, Breer doesn’t see a scenario where the Patriots immediately allocate another major chunk of cap space to re-sign Diggs and essentially add another high-end receiving option.
He also pointed out a potential fit question—beyond cap structure. Diggs is coming off a 1,000-yard receiving season in Foxborough as the top target, which could complicate whether he’d be comfortable being used as a third wide receiver behind a Brown and Doubs pairing.
There’s no debate about the talent if the Patriots could pull it off, though.. Breer’s vision of a weapons-heavy offense includes Brown. Diggs. Doubs. Hunter Henry. Rhamondre Stevenson. and TreVeyon Henderson all operating as options for Drake Maye.. The upside is clear: last season. New England leaned heavily on defense and tight scoring because the offense didn’t have enough impact consistently.
Down the stretch. it became clear the Patriots were outgunned in terms of offensive weapons. often turning games into low-scoring contests.. After that. New England entered the Super Bowl against Seattle with very little offensive output. a stark contrast to what a full complement of targets could look like.
Breer’s projection was that Diggs’s return would likely be shaped by whatever happens in the one-year, $10 million range.. Whether that becomes reality depends. in his view. on whether the Patriots swing for Brown—and whether New England decides it can afford to keep Diggs as more than an extra option.
Even with the reunion framed as a long shot, the Patriots have already made offensive improvements heading toward 2026.. If the Brown trade moves forward. and if the team decides it can put enough playmaking on the field to match the ambition. the offseason could still reshape how New England’s offense looks—cap sheet included.

So they just can’t sign Diggs cuz cap stuff? Cool cool.
I swear Diggs is already basically a Patriot if he posts on IG. Like they’re ignoring the obvious. Also A.J. Brown sounds good but why would that block it??
Albert Breer saying they “love Diggs” but it depends on A.J. Brown first… that sounds like PR to me. If they really wanted him they’d make it work, it’s not like the NFL is hard math. 2026 is a long time, teams always shift money around last second.
This is funny to me because the headline is like “block reunion plans” but really it’s just money, right? If Brown gets traded to NE then Diggs can’t come too… but didn’t the Pats already have like 3 receivers? Maybe they’re acting like salary cap is a physical wall. Also Diggs posting numbers after his ACL like that proves he’s coming back, not that he’s asking for a trade… I guess.
