Mariners’ Cal Raleigh Placed on IL With Oblique Strain

Cal Raleigh is sidelined with a right oblique strain as the Mariners move to adjust their roster, recalling Jhonny Pereda.

A familiar figure in Seattle’s lineup is dealing with a fresh setback: Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain, forcing the team to reshuffle its plans.

The move came Thursday morning in Houston, with Raleigh’s ailment tied to soreness and a reported aggravation during the Mariners’ recent game stretch. It is the first injured list stint of his major league career, and it lands in the sixth season of his time at the top level.

Raleigh’s injury context matters because it follows a rough offensive run. He had been stuck in the longest hitless streak in the majors this season before snapping out of it on Tuesday night in a 10-2 rout of the Houston Astros, when he recorded two singles.

Despite that brief turnaround. the right side became an issue again during the Mariners’ 4-3 loss to the Astros on Wednesday.. Raleigh left the game in the eighth inning after appearing to aggravate the injury to his right side. an outcome that echoes the soreness that had already cost him time earlier in May.

Between May 2 and May 4. Raleigh missed three games with right-side soreness. and the latest IL designation suggests the team is treating the problem as something that needs controlled recovery rather than continued strain.. Mariners manager Dan Wilson acknowledged the decision is difficult. saying nobody wants to go on the injured list. particularly Cal. while also calling it the smart step at this point.

This season, Raleigh’s offensive numbers reflect the combined weight of his prolonged struggles and the difficulty of sustaining production.. Through 41 games. he is hitting .161 with seven home runs. 18 RBI. four doubles. 18 walks and 16 runs. with his batting average ranking second-lowest in the majors among hitters with enough at-bats to qualify.. Only Tampa Bay’s Cedric Mullins has a lower mark at .150.

To cover Raleigh’s absence on the active roster, Seattle recalled catcher Jhonny Pereda from Triple-A Tacoma.. Pereda. 30. has appeared in two games for the Mariners this season. going 2-for-5 with a .400 batting average and one run scored. giving the club at least a recent look at depth behind the plate.

The Mariners also made a separate transaction on the pitching side. sending left-handed pitcher José Suárez to the Athletics for cash considerations.. Suárez has appeared in nine games split between Seattle and the Atlanta Braves this season. posting an 0-1 record with a 6.38 ERA. and the move signals Seattle is adjusting both roster spots and day-to-day availability as the IL scenario unfolds.
