Yankees beat – Yankees end a four-game skid as Goldschmidt and Grisham lead New York. Plus: Mets debut, Skenes’ gem, Schwarber HR streak, and more.
A statement win arrived for the Yankees in Baltimore, where Paul Goldschmidt’s homer on the first pitch and Trent Grisham’s three-run blast powered New York to a victory that snapped a four-game losing streak.
Goldschmidt, starting his day by launching his fourth career leadoff homer and his second in four days, put the Yankees in front for good. Grisham then capped a big third inning, driving in three to make it 6-0, a margin that quickly shifted the pressure onto the Orioles’ staff.
Will Warren delivered a bounce-back for New York, allowing two runs and four hits in 5⅔ innings. The right-hander had previously struggled over four innings against Texas, and this time his control translated into an outing that kept the Yankees’ offense in charge.
The turning point for Baltimore’s pitching came with left-hander Trevor Rogers. who returned from the injured list after an extended illness.. Rogers lasted only four innings and surrendered six runs and six hits. his return moving his season ERA to 5.77 compared to 1.81 in 2025.. Goldschmidt’s early homer and Grisham’s drive made that difficult return even harder.
In Cleveland, Angel Martinez provided the spark with a home run, and the Guardians backed it with pitching that finished with 13 strikeouts as they edged the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 to continue their strong home control.
Martinez. Patrick Bailey. and Bryan Rocchio drove in runs for Cleveland. which improved to 29-4 against the Angels at Progressive Field since 2015.. Even with the Guardians being outhit twice in the series so far. they won the first two games. underscoring how effective they’ve been in turning small margins into results.
For the Angels, Vaughn Grissom homered, but Los Angeles fell to 8-17 on the road, a reminder of how the matchup tilted toward Cleveland’s approach and execution at home.
Pittsburgh’s night carried its own kind of dominance as reigning National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes delivered eight masterful innings to help the Pirates topple Colorado.. Skenes maintained a no-hit bid deep into the game and was retiring hitters at will. including 18 of the first 19 batters he faced.
The no-hit story ended in the seventh when Mickey Moniak broke it up with a single into left-center with one out.. Even then, Skenes kept Colorado’s momentum muted, retiring Hunter Goodman and TJ Rumfield to end the threat.. His control carried again in the eighth. when he allowed a one-out double to Troy Johnston before getting a flyout and a ground ball.
After that stretch, Skenes got a standing ovation when he returned to the dugout following the final out of the eighth, including a strong finish that featured throwing out Ezequiel Tovar to wrap the frame. He capped the night with a season-high 10 strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 1.98.
Offensively. Oneil Cruz collected three hits and Nick Gonzales added two. including an RBI single off Michael Lorenzen in the first that provided the Pirates with enough offense to carry the innings.. Skenes’ performance did the rest, combining run prevention with timely insurance from Pittsburgh’s bats.
Boston’s matchup brought a different kind of momentum to Philadelphia. where Kyle Schwarber extended a hot stretch by tying a Phillies record with a home run in his fifth straight game.. Schwarber delivered his major league-high 17th homer to lead Philadelphia over Boston and help Don Mattingly earn his 900th managerial win.
Philadelphia improved to 20-22 after winning three straight and six of eight, and the run of success has also moved the Phillies to 11-3 since Mattingly took over on April 28. The attacking output has been especially noticeable from Schwarber, who has six homers in his last five games.
The Phillies’ recent streak of power has placed Schwarber among notable company. joining Bobby Abreu. Dick Allen. Odúbel Herrera. Rhys Hoskins. Mike Schmidt. Trea Turner. and Chase Utley as players who have homered in five straight games.. On the mound. Zach Wheeler earned the benefit of his own strong start. allowing one run and six hits over 7⅓ innings with four strikeouts.
At Atlanta, the top-of-the-league clash opened with a pitching showcase that also produced home-run swing for the Braves. Grant Holmes and three relievers combined on a one-hitter as Atlanta beat Chicago in the opener of a three-game set between the National League’s best teams.
Holmes had not pitched since May 1, but he worked four innings and allowed a solo homer to Alex Bregman and an RBI grounder by Moisés Ballesteros. He walked four and struck out five on 78 pitches, before handing the ball to Didier Fuentes, who contributed three scoreless innings in relief.
From there, Dylan Lee threw a perfect eighth and Raisel Iglesias finished the ninth with a clean 1-2-3 frame for his seventh save. Iglesias has not allowed a run over 11⅔ innings this season, keeping the pressure firmly on Chicago throughout the late stages.
The Braves’ offense featured Austin Riley and Mike Yastrzemski going deep, with Yastrzemski going 2-for-2 and driving in three runs.. His two-run homer in the fifth landed near the Chop House restaurant in right field. while Riley had earlier tied the game at 2-all with a solo shot to left at 409 feet.
Cincinnati’s evening ended with Washington turning the night into a six-homer production, led by James Wood’s 12th homer and multiple extra-base blasts. Luis Garcia Jr. and Daylen Lile each drove deep twice as the Nationals defeated the Reds.
Brady House also homered for Washington, which improved to 14-9 on the road.. The Nationals’ pair of two-homer games also stood out historically within the lineup. as Lile and Garcia became the sixth pair of Nationals players to homer twice in the same game. the last occurrence coming from Brian Dozier and Juan Soto on Aug.. 18, 2019.
Washington’s power numbers also reflected the bigger picture, with 50 homers on the season and a new threshold set for single-game output. The group surpassed its previous high of four in a game, which had been set on May 6 in a win over Minnesota.
In a separate development, Reds starter Brady Singer was struck on the right foot by a line drive off Lile in the second inning. Singer stayed in the game after being assessed by training staff and later received an X-ray that came back clean, according to the team.
Minnesota opened its series against Miami with a dominant pitching display from Bailey Ober, who threw a two-hitter for his first career shutout. The Twins also took advantage of key baserunning moments, with Byron Buxton stealing home and Ryan Jeffers adding a two-run homer.
Ober needed 89 pitches to complete the shutout and also struck out seven while walking none. After the fourth inning, he did not allow a hit, showing how Minnesota’s defense and his late-game command combined to limit Miami’s chances.
Meanwhile, Eury Pérez kept Miami in the game early, not allowing a hit until the fifth. But in that fifth, Trevor Larnach’s single advanced Buxton to third and helped set up the Twins’ double-steal that added pressure when it mattered.
Milwaukee’s winning streak continued as Joey Ortiz delivered a homer for the first time in nearly 10 months and drove in two runs in a victory over San Diego. The Brewers extended their run to five straight wins, putting recent momentum on display.
Brandon Sproat improved to 1-2 with his first career victory, striking out six and allowing three runs over 5⅓ innings.. San Diego answered with a solo shot from Miguel Andjuar in the sixth and later cut the lead to 6-4 when Andjuar delivered an RBI double off the tip of center fielder Garrett Mitchell’s glove in the eighth.
In the ninth, Abner Uribe worked around a one-out walk to earn his fourth save in five opportunities, helping close out the win and protect the Brewers’ late lead.
New York’s day also included a notable debut in the Mets’ game against Detroit, where A.J. Ewing gave the Mets an offensive boost in his major league introduction. Freddy Peralta followed with six effective innings as New York picked up the win.
Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez doubled in the fourth and scored on Carson Benge’s tiebreaking single, but the game took a medical turn later. Alvarez was removed in the sixth after hitting a foul ball, and the Mets later announced he has a right knee injury and will undergo imaging Wednesday.
The Mets are also already dealing with absences in their regular lineup. missing shortstop Francisco Lindor. first baseman Jorge Polanco. and center fielder Luis Robert Jr.. With New York sitting at 15-25 entering the game. each new development could carry extra weight for how the roster manages the coming stretch.
Elsewhere, Tampa Bay’s late execution proved decisive in a 7-6, 10-inning win over Toronto. Taylor Walls put the Rays in front with an RBI single in the tenth and later scored on Jonathan Aranda’s sacrifice fly.
Walls’ key hit drove in automatic runner Cedric Mullins against Braydon Fisher to make it 6-5, and Aranda’s fly ball to center then provided a two-run cushion. The advantage held after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom half against Garrett Cleavinger, who earned his first save.
Ian Seymour recorded four outs for the win, while Ryan Vilade hit his second homer and Cedric Mullins drove in two. The Rays, now the AL-best at 28-13, won their sixth straight series and moved to 16 wins in 18 games.
Chicago’s comeback bite arrived in extra late moments as Derek Hill, a pinch-hitter, broke an eighth-inning tie with a homer. Even after the White Sox wasted a three-run lead, they secured their third straight win against Kansas City.
Drew Romo opened the scoring with a solo homer that just cleared right field. and Chase Meidroth added a three-run drive off Stephen Kolek in a five-run fifth to build a 5-2 advantage.. Kansas City tied it in the sixth when Nick Loftin hit an RBI double against Tyler Schweitzer and scored on Maikel Garcia’s single off Grant Taylor.
Texas and Arizona delivered their own pitching-and-batting story at Arlington, where MacKenzie Gore matched a Texas pitching milestone by going eight innings, allowing three hits while Joc Pederson and Ezequiel Duran homered. Texas won 7-4.
Jake Burger’s day stood out, as he went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs, reaching base a season-high four times. Gore allowed Ildemaro Vargas’ solo homer in the third while throwing just 95 pitches and striking out five with one walk, matching the longest start by a Texas pitcher this year.
Vargas also contributed offensively beyond the homer, adding an RBI single in the ninth on a 2-for-4 night that raised his batting average to .336.
Houston’s evening turned into a chase against Seattle, where Dominic Canzone hit his first career grand slam and Randy Arozarena went 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. The Mariners routed the Astros, extending their dominance to a ninth straight win over Houston and pushing a franchise record.
Canzone also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth to set his career high with five RBIs. Arozarena doubled twice, tied a career high with four hits, and matched a season-best total with three RBIs, making Seattle’s offense feel relentless from start to finish.
The action continued in the Cardinals’ road swing in California. where JJ Wetherholt hit a two-run homer and José Fermín drove in two with a double as St.. Louis beat the Athletics 6-4.. The Cardinals snapped a two-game skid and improved their major league-best road record to 14-7. while also adding a reassuring note that they have not yet lost three straight road games this season.
Andre Pallante struck out four and allowed four hits and three runs in five innings before four relievers took over. Riley O’Brien worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to earn his 12th save, closing the door after the Cardinals regained their footing.
In Los Angeles, San Francisco’s win over the Dodgers came from late swing through the order. Harrison Bader and Eric Haase homered back-to-back in the fifth inning to provide the tying and go-ahead runs, and the Giants held on.
Haase tied the game with a solo shot in the third. his first homer since May 7. 2025. and he nearly went deep again in the seventh when Andy Pages caught a long drive at the center field wall.. Bader’s two-strike homer was his first since March 30 and tied the game before Haase delivered again for a 3-2 lead.
It marked the first time Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto surrendered three homers in a game.. All three came from the eighth and ninth spots in the Giants’ lineup with two outs.. For Los Angeles. Shohei Ohtani also homered for the first time since April 26. ensuring the Dodgers remained a threat even during a difficult stretch.
