Ohio State Prepares for Season Without Star Quarterback Julian Sayin After Injury

The Ohio State Buckeyes face a sudden and formidable challenge to their championship ambitions following an injury to star quarterback Julian Sayin during Saturday’s 19-15 victory over No. 6 Indiana.

Before the injury, the junior signal-caller had established himself as one of the most efficient and productive quarterbacks in the nation. Through six games this season, Sayin completed 68.2 percent of his passes, accumulating 2,007 yards, 19 touchdowns, and four interceptions. His steady leadership had kept the Buckeyes firmly on track for another deep postseason run and a return to the College Football Playoff.

Speaking to reporters, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day delivered a sobering assessment of the situation, revealing that the program is preparing for the possibility that Sayin’s season is over. Day indicated that the injury involves Sayin’s right throwing arm and shoulder, though he declined to delve into specific medical details out of respect for the player and his family.

“First off, we’re not going to put any timeline on his recovery, but he is out indefinitely,” Day told reporters. “What we’re trying to do is give Julian and his family the space and privacy to go through this process. But based on the nature of the injury, we are putting together a plan for him not being available for the regular season, and also him not being available for the postseason.”

With Sayin sidelined indefinitely, the Buckeyes must quickly pivot to alternative options under center to navigate the remainder of their schedule. The coaching staff is expected to turn primarily to freshman Luke Fahey. In three appearances this season, Fahey has completed 9 of 13 passing attempts for 203 yards, throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions.

In addition to Fahey, Ohio State maintains former five-star prospect Tavien St. Clair on the roster. The sophomore quarterback has seen limited action this year, completing 5 of 7 passes for 52 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

As the coaching staff formulates a revised offensive strategy without their starting quarterback, the team must maintain its competitive edge heading into the critical closing stretch of the regular season and potential postseason matchups.
