Trump Administration Divided Over Proposed Executive Order Targeting Housing Affordability

The Trump administration is experiencing internal divisions regarding a proposed executive order designed to address housing affordability as the midterm elections approach in less than two weeks. White House officials have been grappling with strategies to tackle the rising cost of living, leading to discussions surrounding a multi-section draft directive that could significantly alter mortgage and lending rules.

The draft legislation, which spans six sections, outlines several key changes intended to ease financial pressures on homeowners and prospective buyers. Among its provisions, the order would make it easier for certain homeowners to proactively cancel their mortgage insurance. It would also establish a new interagency task force focused on manufactured housing, permit additional homeowners to refinance their properties without title insurance, and direct both the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Veterans Affairs to lower interest rates for single-family home loans.

Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte is strongly advocating for President Trump to sign the order as early as this week. However, other officials within the administration are urging caution and attempting to slow down the process. The ongoing debate has also drawn scrutiny from housing industry groups, which have raised concerns that some of the proposed modifications could unintentionally drive up property prices rather than lower them.

Representatives from the housing sector have emphasized the need for careful deliberation rather than rushed policymaking driven by political timing. Industry observers noted that while stabilization of housing costs is a shared goal, stakeholders want to ensure any implemented measures are substantive and executed safely.

Neither the White House nor Bill Pulte’s office provided comments on the ongoing discussions regarding the draft order.
