Australia Seamer Megan Schutt Suspended Two Matches Over Prescription Medication Rule Breach

Australian pace bowler Megan Schutt has been handed a two-match suspension by Cricket Australia after failing to comply with strict internal guidelines governing the use of prescription medication during an out-of-competition window.
Cricket Australia announced the disciplinary action on Thursday, clarifying that the violation stemmed from a single, isolated incident that took place while the 33-year-old seamer was during an off-period for the national squad prior to a series against Bangladesh. Officials emphasized that the medication involved was not performance-enhancing and that its use was legal under both general athletic and anti-doping authorities, though internal protocols require rigorous adherence regarding personal use and reporting.
“The breach was a failure to adhere to requirements under the Sports Science and Sports Medicine guidelines with regard to prescription medication,” Cricket Australia stated in its official release. “This relates to a single incidence which occurred while out of competition and was not for performance enhancing purposes. We will continue to provide appropriate support to Megan and reinforce the standards and responsibilities expected of everyone representing our game.”
The two-match ban applies across both international and domestic cricket fixtures. Schutt will miss the upcoming third Twenty20 International against New Zealand as well as the Women’s Big Bash League opening fixture for the Adelaide Strikers against the Melbourne Stars, scheduled for Saturday, October 31.
Schutt issued a public statement accepting the sanction without contest and expressing remorse for the situation.
“I fully accept the penalty handed down and apologise for failing to meet the standards expected of me,” Schutt said. “I’m sorry for the attention this has caused and appreciate the support I’ve received. While this occurred out of competition and was not performance related, I understand that I am responsible for following the Sports Science and Sports Medicine Guidelines, which players receive regular education on and I should have adhered to these guidelines.”
During the pendency of the internal investigation, Schutt remained active on the field, participating in four matches while compliance officials reviewed the incident. Her appearances during that inquiry included a Women’s National Cricket League fixture for South Australia, where she claimed two wickets for 49 runs, followed by a three-match One Day International series against Bangladesh. In those international outings, she recorded bowling figures of 2 for 19, 4 for 36, and 4 for 16.
Following the conclusion of the investigation, Schutt was available for selection during the opening T20Is against New Zealand on Sunday and Tuesday, though she was not named to the playing XI. With the disciplinary process now finalized, she will begin serving her mandatory two-match absence starting with Thursday’s final T20I fixture against New Zealand.
