Health Ally Resigns, Ties to Streeting Highlight UK Chaos

A junior health minister resigned, citing loss of confidence in the prime minister, adding to mounting pressure and leadership uncertainty.

A junior minister in the health department has resigned from government, escalating a leadership crisis and dealing another blow to an already unstable political moment.

Zubir Ahmed, a Scottish Labour MP for Glasgow South West, said he had “irrevocably” lost confidence in the Prime Minister.. In his resignation. he pointed to what he described as a “lack of values-driven leadership” at the centre of government. saying it had “undermined” his work in the health department.

Ahmed’s departure marks the fourth minister to step away from the government so far.. Earlier resignations included Miatta Fahnbulleh. the faith and communities minister. as well as Home Office minister Jess Phillips and Justice minister Alex-Davies Jones.. Taken together, the moves have further intensified public signs of disarray inside the governing ranks.

The fallout also carries political symbolism beyond the health portfolio.. Ahmed is described as a close ally of Health Secretary Wes Streeting. who is widely seen as a potential candidate for Labour’s leadership if Keir Starmer steps down and a leadership contest is triggered.. The resignation therefore arrives at a time when party figures are already recalibrating their positions for a possible change at the top.

Ahmed’s letter. published first by a major UK newspaper outlet. framed his decision as a consequence of wider governance failures and political damage he says is already being done to local communities.. He referenced the recent election results in Scotland last week. characterizing them as “as intolerable as it was avoidable. ” and argued the consequences will deepen “division and decay” among his constituents in Glasgow South West.

The minister also linked the central governing style to a chain reaction he believes has worsened the party’s standing.. He wrote that “the noise created at the centre of government you lead” became. in his view. the “midwife” for what he called “an incompetent” fifth-term SNP government.. While the statement is deeply political in tone. it also underscores how internal party conflict and leadership disputes are now being cast as issues with real-world consequences for governance and representation.

In one of the most personal parts of the resignation letter. Ahmed invoked his professional background. saying that throughout his surgical career he had been guided by principles of “precision. clarity. candour. ” along with “an aspiration for excellence.” He said those same principles were what he tried to bring into Parliament and into his ministerial work.. He then argued that those principles led him to the conclusion that the Prime Minister’s continued tenure is “wholly untenable.”

Ahmed’s call for a leadership change went further than expressing disagreement.. He asked the Prime Minister to step aside and set a timetable for what he described as an “expedient and orderly transition” to new leadership that can command the confidence of the country.. He coupled the request with appreciation. saying he would remain grateful for the prime minister’s “decency and tireless work” in turning the party around and for inspiring what he described as a national duty before party.

The resignation adds to a growing count of MPs calling for the Prime Minister to resign. which is now put at 90.. With one minister leaving after another. the government faces mounting pressure not only over policy and performance. but over whether leadership stability can be restored in time to prevent further erosion of public confidence.

For voters and party activists alike. the immediate question is whether the latest resignation becomes a turning point or a continuation of the same political spiral.. For Ahmed. the decision was anchored in a belief that urgent action is required and that leadership must change to halt further damage.
