Slow Horses Season 6 Finale Delivers Deadly Cliffhanger and High-Stakes Fallout

The espionage drama *Slow Horses* concluded its sixth season with an action-packed finale that delivered a devastating casualty, a complex double-cross, and a cliffhanger centering on agent River Cartwright. The sixth season drew from Mick Herron’s novels *Joe Country* and *Slough House*, following Jackson Lamb and the misfit operatives of MI5 as they went on the run from Russian assassins and River’s father, Frank Harkness, following a botched retaliation plan orchestrated by First Desk Diana Taverner.
In the season finale, titled “Judgment Day,” Lamb confronted Taverner over the unauthorized operations tied to Damien Cantor and Russian funding. Taverner revealed plans to surrender Sid to the GRU and confess to treason before the Home Secretary to take herself off the board. Rejecting that approach, Lamb devised an alternative strategy to protect his team.
Lamb located Natasha and convinced her to redirect the blame for the Kazan operation by positioning Cantor as the mastermind behind an off-books double-agent scheme. Cantor was intercepted by Lamb and taken to an airfield, where he was forced onto a waiting plane to neutral ground. Before departing, Cantor ordered Harkness to stand down and abort the mission targeting the MI5 agents.
Meanwhile, the safe house came under heavy assault from Harkness and his mercenaries. The ensuing firefight resulted in significant losses for the agency. Flyte was fatally shot by Harkness while attempting to secure an escape vehicle, and assassin Jane returned to target River, wounding Louisa in the process. Young Reece defended himself with assistance from Shirley and Ho, ultimately neutralizing one of the attackers.
Following the confrontation, Taverner carried out her visit to the Home Secretary’s office, undermining Peter Judd and retaining her position as First Desk. The surviving agents of Slough House later gathered to honor their fallen colleagues, including Coe.
In the final moments of the episode, Standish mentioned a light left burning at David Cartwright’s house. River traveled to the residence, where he found Sid inside. Shortly after entering, River experienced severe respiratory distress, gasping for air and collapsing after handling a crowbar on the kitchen counter. The episode ended with River unresponsive on the floor.
Source material from the underlying book series indicates that a Russian nerve agent was involved in the poisoning, potentially transferred from the crowbar during the confrontation. While subsequent literary entries suggest a path forward for the character, viewers are left awaiting the premiere of the seventh season to see how the adaptation addresses the cliffhanger.
