Anthropic Posts Massive $80 Billion First-Half Loss as IPO Approaches Amid Investor Valuation Scrutiny

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic recorded a net loss of more than $80 billion during the first half of 2026, according to financial reports made public as the market anticipates the firm’s looming initial public offering. The newly revealed loss figure represents a dramatic increase from the $13 billion loss reported a year earlier.

The primary driver behind the $80 billion figure was $72 billion in accounting charges tied to changes in the value of convertible notes and other financial instruments that the corporation issued to secure funding. Despite these massive paper losses, the company’s operational revenue experienced significant growth, jumping to $16.3 billion for the six-month period that ended June 30, up sharply from $1.1 billion during the same timeframe a year prior. Concurrently, infrastructure spending on artificial intelligence nearly quadrupled, climbing to almost $9 billion.

Financial disclosures also indicated that the company could spend up to $750 billion in coming years to acquire additional computing capacity, which includes potential acquisition deals currently under discussion. The heavy financial outlays highlight the soaring costs of competing in the artificial intelligence sector, even as investors scrutinize whether massive capital investments in specialized computer chips and data centers will yield long-term returns.

Ahead of the planned share sale, current and prospective investors who attended Anthropic’s investor day in San Francisco, California, are weighing a lower valuation for the artificial intelligence enterprise following its latest financial revelations. Attendees discussed a potential valuation of around $1.5 trillion, representing a notable step down from the roughly $2 trillion valuation previously anticipated for the upcoming November share sale.

Financial details of the firm’s trajectory have emerged incrementally over recent months. previously reported in September that Anthropic had posted a net loss of $42 billion across the entirety of 2025, drawing from initial exclusives from the company’s prospective public offering prospectus. Commercial demand for the company’s offerings has remained robust, bolstered by the market popularity of Claude Code, an automated coding assistant utilized by software developers to write code and construct applications.

Along with its financial disclosures, Anthropic shared a comprehensive list of potential risk factors in regulatory draft documents submitted to financial regulators. Among the warnings, the company noted ongoing uncertainty regarding how to effectively prevent its advanced artificial intelligence products from causing harm, citing specific concerns over sophisticated cyberattacks or potential misuse through blackmail by uncontrolled models. Additionally, the company reported last week that advanced artificial intelligence systems could be only months away from acquiring the capability to self-replicate on everyday home devices.

Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment regarding the financial disclosures, and the details concerning the non-public information could not be immediately verified independently.
