California Woman Goes Viral After Explaining Why She Deliberately Sleeps on Airport Floors

For most travelers, spending a night sleeping on the cold, hard floor of an airport terminal is a last resort brought on by canceled flights, severe weather, or missed connections. But for one California woman, sleeping among the departure gates is a deliberate travel strategy.

Santeon Brown, a 29-year-old actor and nanny based in Los Angeles, recently went viral on TikTok after revealing that she intentionally bypassed booking a hotel room during a spontaneous trip, opting instead to spend the night sleeping on the floor of San Francisco International Airport. Brown had booked a $20 flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco and arrived at night, determining that paying for a hotel room for just a few hours was unnecessary.

“I just stayed here overnight,” Brown said in a video posted on October 15. “I didn’t get stuck, I planned it, and it was a good decision and a good time.”

Financial savings served as a primary motivator for the choice, but Brown also pointed to security and convenience. Arriving late at night, she noted that staying airside felt safer than venturing out into an unfamiliar urban environment after dark, particularly because passengers in the terminal had already cleared security screening.

“Everyone’s been vetted, you know no one has any weapons or anything crazy,” she explained.

The video quickly drew significant attention on social media, accumulating 725,000 views. Public reaction was sharply divided, with some viewers expressing shock or calling the practice unhygienic, while others found the concept intriguing or novel.

Drawing on her background as an avid camper who has slept in airports on multiple occasions, Brown arrived prepared for the overnight stay. Rather than roughing it completely unprepared, she brought a sleeping pad, a sheet, and her bonnet to ensure comfort. She compared the experience favorably to sleeping in her car or on free Bureau of Land Management land, noting it can sometimes feel more comfortable.

While terminal facilities lack traditional bathing amenities, Brown manages her hygiene routine by using public restrooms to brush her teeth, wash her face, and freshen up with baby wipes.

Offering advice for travelers considering a similar route, Brown recommended packing light while bringing key items to replicate a normal bedtime routine. “I like to be cozy and warm, so I made sure I had a cozy sheet,” she said.

While spontaneous floor sleeping remains an unconventional choice, airport accommodations worldwide vary widely for travelers seeking rest during long journeys. Platforms and travel reports have highlighted that major international facilities, such as Singapore Changi Airport and Perth Airport in Australia, provide dedicated sleeping pods for layovers. Meanwhile, Benito Juárez International Airport in Mexico City was named North America’s most sleep-friendly airport in 2024, aided by amenities like 24-hour food outlets, massage chairs, specialized lounges, and seating benches designed without armrests.
