Trump Suggests Data Center Firms Pay Local Dividends to Ease Community Backlash

President Donald Trump suggested that companies building data centers should offer local communities a financial “dividend” to help turn unpopular projects into accepted local developments. In a social media post published early Wednesday, Trump encouraged developers to “MAKE DEALS,” though he did not specify monetary amounts or outline how funds should be distributed to municipalities or individual residents affected by construction.

Trump wrote that he had observed the planning process closely, noting that facilities facing steep initial resistance often win widespread approval once financial agreements are reached. The proposal arrives amid a mounting wave of opposition to data center developments across the United States. Residents and local groups have increasingly pushed back against the facilities, citing high noise levels, escalating electricity bills, and disruptions to the general quality of living.

Data Center Watch, a research project operated by 10a Labs, tracked the scale of the resistance, finding that at least 75 data center projects experienced delays or outright cancellations during the first quarter of the year due to local pushback. Market specialists have increasingly warned investors to factor local opposition into their evaluations.

The Wednesday proposal builds upon previous initiatives championed by Trump aimed at mitigating the infrastructural footprint of large technology installations. He referenced an earlier effort in which tech companies agreed to cover their own power costs to prevent facility expansion from driving up electricity rates for local residents. In March, several major technology leaders signed the “Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” committing to fund or supply the necessary power generation and electricity for their artificial intelligence projects.

Trump concluded his statement by asserting that constructing data centers under these newer stipulations would ultimately prove beneficial for the country.
