Upcoming Release of Grand Theft Auto 6 Projected to Cause Billion-Dollar Productivity Drop

The United States economy could face a productivity loss of up to $1 billion tied directly to the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6, according to recent analyst projections. Reports indicate that roughly 1.5 million American workers intend to take the day off from their jobs to coincide with the high-profile video game launch scheduled for Nov. 19.
José García Montalvo, an analyst who contributed to the projections, clarified that the figures represent an academic estimation rather than an official corporate forecast. The calculation relies on the estimated 1.5 million planned absences combined with an average annual output of approximately $70,000 per worker across the United States. This dynamic points to a potential short-term decline in national productivity of about 2% for the day. Demographic trends suggest that men between the ages of 18 and 30 account for the majority of the workers expected to miss work, with the technology sector bracing for the most significant impact.
Financial projections place the anticipated economic dip at roughly $1 billion, a figure that nearly mirrors the expected revenue generation for Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher. Meanwhile, corporate adjustments are already underway across various industries. Some organizations are anticipating temporary work disruptions, while others are reportedly considering integrating the launch date into employee end-of-year perks packages.
