Dow Jones Closes Higher on Strong Earnings and Falling Oil Prices as AI Tech Stumbles

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed on Tuesday, driven by strong corporate earnings reports and a retreat in oil prices that helped offset ongoing market pressure among artificial intelligence-related equities.

The blue-chip index advanced 529.85 points, translating to a 1.02% gain, to close the session at 52,495.88. The broader S&P 500 added 0.28% to finish at 7,712.57, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite edged down 0.02% to end at 26,424.82.

Strong performances from industrial and defense companies provided significant momentum for the Dow. Shares of industrial and safety products manufacturer 3M jumped more than 5% following better-than-expected quarterly earnings results and an upward revision to its full-year financial guidance. Concurrently, shares of aerospace and defense contractor Northrop Grumman advanced more than 4% after posting an earnings beat.

Investor sentiment also found relief as oil prices pulled back from earlier gains. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures dropped 1.8% to settle at $101.79 per barrel, while Brent crude futures declined 0.7% to finish at $108.79 a barrel. These downward moves in oil accompanied declines in Treasury yields, as traders continued to monitor unfolding developments in the Middle East.

Despite the positive close for the major averages, the broader financial market has faced recent headwinds stemming from growing worries about the sustainability of the artificial intelligence trade, particularly regarding debt and demand concerns. Technology sentiment took an immediate hit earlier in the day when Korean AI firm Elice plunged more than 30% overnight during its public market debut. That drop contributed to wider declines across Asia-Pacific markets on Tuesday following an earlier advance in U.S. equities.

However, some AI-related equities managed a recovery as the trading session progressed. Western Digital shares rose more than 3%, Seagate Technology gained more than 2%, and both CoreWeave and Marvell Technology advanced more than 1%.

Tuesday’s market action followed a positive session on Monday, when the S&P 500 finished in positive territory and the Nasdaq Composite climbed more than 1%. That earlier rebound helped claw back ground lost during the previous week’s market rout, which was triggered by intensifying anxieties over companies borrowing heavily to finance massive AI infrastructure build-outs.

Market observers noted that the broader equity landscape has shifted as investors scrutinize the financial foundations of the technology boom.

“For much of this year, the market has been willing to look through higher rates because the growth story, notably that around AI, was strong enough to justify it. Last week, we saw that relationship begin to be tested,” said Jake Behan, head of capital markets at Direxion.

Looking ahead, market participants are bracing for upcoming corporate updates from major technology providers.

“Hyperscalers report over the next few weeks, setting up the next major stress test for the AI trade,” Behan added. “Guidance around ROI, data center spending and 2027 capex will arguably be more important than the headline earnings figures.”
