Norte Fire Triggers Mandatory Evacuations Across Southern Orange County Amid Santa Ana Winds

The Norte fire broke out in southern Orange County on Friday morning, rapidly spreading amid strong Santa Ana winds and triggering mandatory evacuation orders for residents in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. By 11 a.m. Saturday, the fast-moving blaze had burned 570 acres and destroyed six homes, according to updates from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Fire officials reported that containment efforts stood at just 5 percent as crews continued battling the flames in difficult weather conditions.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for multiple neighborhoods across the region, including San Juan Capistrano Zones 4, 5, and 10, alongside San Clemente Zones 12 and 13. Local emergency officials issued urgent warnings to residents within the impact area. “If you are in one of these zones, leave immediately,” the Orange County Fire Authority stated in a message published on the social media platform X.
The affected evacuation zones encompass a broad expanse of hillside neighborhoods bordered by the 5 Freeway, Ortega Highway, and Avenida La Pata. The danger zone also extends downward into coastal-adjacent residential areas situated between the 5 Freeway and Camino Los Mares. Residents seeking detailed geographic information can consult evacuation zone maps provided on the official website of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
To accommodate displaced residents, authorities established several local shelters. Evacuees can find refuge at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center, located at 25925 Camino del Avion, or the San Clemente Community Center, situated at 100 Calle Seville. Additionally, an overnight shelter was opened at the Boys & Girls Club at 1 Via Positiva in San Juan Capistrano, which accommodates families alongside their animals.
Separate emergency facilities were also organized for pets and livestock displaced by the emergency. For evacuees from San Juan Capistrano, OC Animal Care set up an emergency shelter specifically for dogs, cats, and small pets at 1630 Victory Road in Tustin. Meanwhile, displaced residents from San Clemente can house their companion animals at the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter, located at 221 Avenida Fabricante in San Clemente.
