Knicks Open Title Defense With Madison Square Garden Banner-Raising Ceremony

The New York Knicks will mark their season opener as defending NBA champions Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden with a traditional banner-raising ceremony. The championship banner is scheduled to be raised to the rafters just before tipoff at 7 p.m., capping off a summer of celebration following a historic playoff run that brought the franchise its first title in 53 years after defeating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the finals.

Returning to the floor for New York this season are core contributors Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby. The roster aims to build upon the established chemistry that carried them to the championship trophy last year, though their immediate focus turns to an opening-night test against Philadelphia.

The matchup brings back a familiar rivalry from June, when the Knicks swept the 76ers out of the postseason. However, the landscape in Philadelphia has shifted with the addition of star player LeBron James, who is set to make his team debut. During the preseason, the 76ers handed the Knicks a 120-97 defeat, winning by 23 points even while playing without several key contributors, including James.

Josh Hart acknowledged the anticipation surrounding the matchup and the narrative framing the evening. “Wherever Bron went out on the East, I figured that would probably be our opening night,” Hart said. “Getting the ring, hanging the banner, that would be dope, but also excited to kind of move on from it.” Hart emphasized that while the banner honors last season’s achievement, the team recognizes the necessity of proving themselves anew.

Ticket demand for the season opener has reached exceptionally high levels, driven by the combination of the championship ring and banner ceremony, the start of a new home campaign at the Garden, and the addition of star power on the opposing roster. Average ticket prices for Tuesday’s game exceeded $1,000 per seat ahead of tipoff.
