Former Boston Celtics Champion Drew Peterson Waived by Chicago Bulls Ahead of New NBA Season

Drew Peterson has hit the free-agent market once again. Ahead of the upcoming 20th-century NBA season, the Chicago Bulls announced that they have officially waived the former Boston Celtics forward.

Peterson entered the professional ranks after going undrafted in 2023, following a five-year collegiate career split between Rice and USC. His early professional path included a stint with the Miami Heat during the 2023 NBA Summer League and time with their NBA G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, to open the 2023-24 campaign. In December 2023, Peterson secured his first major NBA opportunity by signing a two-way contract with the Celtics.

During his time in Boston, Peterson saw limited action at the NBA level, appearing in three games during the 2023-24 season and 25 games during the 2024-25 season. Across those appearances, he averaged 2.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 7.4 minutes per game.

Despite his limited playing time, the 6-foot-8 forward built a notable resume during his tenure with the organization. Peterson was a member of Boston’s 2024 championship squad that defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals, securing his first career NBA title. In the same year, he played a key role in helping the Maine Celtics reach their first-ever G League Finals appearance.

Reflecting on his versatility during his dual runs to the NBA and G League finals, Peterson noted his willingness to adapt to various tactical demands. Speaking on his utility within the system, Peterson previously explained that he aimed to serve as a primary ball handler while fulfilling multiple positional requirements.

Following his tenure in Boston, Peterson’s career path took him through several additional organizations. He signed a two-way contract with the Charlotte Hornets for the 2025-26 season before being waived by the franchise in December 2025. Most recently, the Libertyville, Illinois native signed a training-camp contract with the Chicago Bulls in hopes of securing a roster spot ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Across his professional career, Peterson holds averages of 2.1 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game, while shooting 36.5 percent from the field and 32.0 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. With his release from Chicago, Peterson will now evaluate his options and seek his next professional opportunity.
