Yesavage sharp in debut as Blue Jays blank Red Sox 3-0

Trey Yesavage turned in a sharp season debut, and Toronto used timely hitting and a shutout bullpen to end Boston’s streak at 3.
Toronto delivered a message to the AL East on Tuesday night: the Blue Jays can stop momentum cold.
With Trey Yesavage pitching into the sixth, Toronto beat the Boston Red Sox 3-0 and snapped Boston’s season-best winning streak at three games. The shutout also gave interim Red Sox manager Chad Tracy his first loss since taking over after Alex Cora was fired Saturday.
Yesavage’s outing was the backbone of the game.. The 22-year-old right-hander—making what was effectively a fresh start after beginning the season on the injured list with a shoulder impingement—was efficient from the start and controlled the zone without issuing free passes.. He struck out three. walked none. and allowed four hits across 5 1/3 innings. finishing his work after 74 pitches. 50 of them for strikes.
The Toronto offense made sure the lead didn’t rely on one big swing.. Kazuma Okamoto opened the scoring in the third with a two-out single that turned into the first run of the night.. Vladimir Guerrero Jr.. then added an RBI single later. giving the Blue Jays the cushion they needed while Boston struggled to string together meaningful at-bats.
Toronto’s bullpen completed the separation.. After Yesavage handed things off. the relief corps held the Red Sox hitless over 3 2/3 innings. preserving a comfortable lead instead of turning the final frames into a grind.. Mason Fluharty recorded two outs in the sixth. Jeff Hoffman struck out two in the seventh. Tyler Rogers worked the eighth. and Louis Varland finished the job for his fourth save in four chances.
The timing mattered for Boston, too.. The Red Sox had been on a roll entering the game. and they came in with the kind of momentum that can make early innings feel inevitable.. Instead. they got shut down in a way that felt unusually clean for a team that had found ways to win recently.. The Red Sox failed to record a home run for the first time in six games.
From Toronto’s perspective, the win carried more than one headline.. A pitcher returning from injury with a shoulder impingement naturally brings questions about feel and workload. and Yesavage’s ability to go deep into the game—then exit with his pitch count under control—provided a reassuring answer.. The reaction at the end of the outing underscored how quickly a performance can reset a season’s expectations for a club that is always searching for consistency.
For Boston. the loss served as a reminder that streaks don’t protect teams from the smaller details: getting hits with runners in scoring position. converting opportunities into extra bases. and preventing an early deficit from turning into a full-game chase.. Even in a game where Toronto’s margin wasn’t enormous. the Red Sox never looked fully settled behind the plate or at the plate.
It was also a rough night for Boston’s starting pitching.. Making his second start of the season. left-hander Payton Tolle allowed three runs on three hits over 4 2/3 innings and left after consecutive two-out walks in the fifth—one of those late-inning moments where control slips just enough to change the game’s shape.
There is a practical next step on both sides.. Toronto’s rotation continues to evolve, and the club had not yet named a starter for Wednesday’s series finale.. Boston. meanwhile. is scheduled to send RHP Brayan Bello to the mound. and the matchup becomes more than just a reset after a shutout—it becomes a test of whether Boston can bounce back immediately when its offense is cooled and its bullpen is asked to cover more innings than usual.
