A tentative contract deal has brought WGA West staff a step closer to ending a long strike, with a ratification vote expected in the coming days.
Misryoum confirms that the Writers Guild of America West Staff Union (WGSU) announced the agreement after nearly three months of strike action.. The plan includes a minimum four percent salary increase retroactive to January 1. 2026. followed by additional four percent raises in August 2026 and again in August 2027.
The package also adds protections aimed at stabilizing staff roles during layoffs and includes a no-strike clause designed to safeguard concerted activity. The WGSU bargaining group said it is recommending members vote yes, framing the moment as a return to focusing on defending hard-won gains.
This matters because staff contracts often shape day-to-day power inside major entertainment institutions. When those agreements move forward, it can quickly ripple into how work is organized and how negotiations are approached going forward.
The strike began in February, and the labor standoff unfolded while WGA leadership was separately negotiating its own new contract with film and TV studios. In the meantime, the WGA West Awards ceremony was canceled, and tensions between the sides reportedly escalated over the course of the dispute.

The proposed terms outline minimum increases across the three-year term and raise the salary floor from $43,000 to $57,000 retroactive to August 11, 2025.. It also calls for longevity increases retroactive to January 1. 2026. just-cause provisions with a stepped grievance process. and the creation of a Labor-Management Committee to support healthier worksite communication.. In addition. the agreement includes safeguards intended to prevent bargaining unit roles from being replaced by AI. temporary employees. or contractors.
Meanwhile. Misryoum reports that both WGA East and WGA West reached separate deals with studios in April. tied to an expanded contribution to guild health and pension plans and a longer term..
