Tyler Mahle Faces His Biggest Test Against The Dodgers
Acquired at the trade deadline, Tyler Mahle takes the mound for a crucial, season-saving Game 4 for the Braves.
When Tyler Mahle takes the mound at Truist Park on Wednesday. he will be stepping into the most important start of his life. With the Dodgers holding a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five National League Division Series, the Braves are facing potential elimination. For Mahle. it is the moment he was brought to Atlanta to face. even if few outside the clubhouse saw it coming.
“He’s been very valuable for us ever since he came over this year,” Braves third baseman Austin Riley said. “I think he’ll be up for the moment.”
There was a time, shortly after the August 2 trade deadline, when the acquisition of Mahle was met with skepticism. Critics questioned why the team didn’t secure a more traditional, playoff-caliber starter. At that point, the right-hander had posted a 5.13 ERA across 18 starts for the Giants. Yet. the Braves’ front office saw potential in the seven starts he made after returning from a month-long hamstring strain. where he posted a 3.73 ERA. They were confident that shifting his pitch mix—reducing his cutter usage while leaning harder into his splitter—would unlock a new level of performance.
The results have been transformative for the Braves’ rotation. Since joining the team. Mahle has posted a 1.99 ERA over nine regular-season starts. outperforming the Dodgers’ own deadline addition. Tarik Skubal. who recorded a 2.61 ERA in ten starts. Manager Walt Weiss admitted the impact has been beyond expectation: “Mahle has been unbelievable. We could never have anticipated he would be this good. But he has been, and it’s changed our rotation, really.”.
Mahle’s trajectory has been defined by his ability to handle pressure. He carried his late-season momentum into the postseason. limiting the Phillies to just one run over seven innings in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series. Earlier this year. he demonstrated he has the measure of his next opponent. throwing seven scoreless innings against the Dodgers on April 22.
Despite the weight of a season potentially ending on Wednesday. Mahle is treating the upcoming start with the same focus he applied to his late-season outings against Philadelphia. “All of those other starts in September against the Phillies, they were big games,” Mahle said. “I’m sure it’s going to feel very similar to that.”.
