A fatal head-on collision on a remote stretch of road near Palmdale has left two people dead and two others injured, with investigators saying evidence collected from one vehicle indicates alcohol may have played a role.
The crash occurred Friday evening along Mount Emma Road in Littlerock, part of California’s Antelope Valley. The California Highway Patrol said two vehicles collided head-on on what was described as a dusty, deserted stretch of roadway.
In the preliminary investigation, the driver of an Infiniti G35 allegedly veered into oncoming traffic on Mount Emma Road, where it struck a Honda Pilot SUV traveling in the opposite direction, according to the CHP.
The driver and a passenger in the Infiniti were not wearing seat belts, the Highway Patrol said, and were pronounced dead at the scene. Two injured occupants of the SUV were airlifted to a hospital.
The CHP did not provide information on the condition of those injured. The release also said the identities of the deceased would not be released yet, pending notification of their families.
The Highway Patrol said it is still investigating the crash and that it has collected evidence from the Infiniti that indicates alcohol was a “contributing factor.” Investigators’ next steps will likely focus on confirming how alcohol may have affected driving behavior and whether other factors also contributed.
