In New Mexico, a jury ordered Meta to pay $375 million in civil penalties after finding the company failed to protect young users from predators and misled them about the safety of its apps. Then, in Los Angeles, a jury ruled that Meta and YouTube were negligent in the way their platforms were designed and operated, leading to mental health harm for a 20-year-old plaintiff identified as Kaley, or “KGM.” That jury ordered $6 million in damages total. Meta and YouTube dispute the verdicts and are planning to appeal—so, yes, the story isn’t finished yet.
Still, the legal theory and the pressure around it are already drawing attention. There’s also the knock-on effect on artificial intelligence. Misryoum newsroom reported that experts expect product liability arguments could move beyond social platforms and target generative AI tools—especially as families file lawsuits alleging that AI chatbots played a role in suicides. OpenAI and Anthropic have rolled out AI-powered chatbots quickly, and some critics argue that the rush to market has come at the expense of safety. Jess Miers, an assistant professor at the University of Akron School of Law, said Misryoum editorial team believes most cases against online services—and now generative AI companies—could end up framed as product liability.
In terms of what changes might actually show up, the Los Angeles trial ordered damages but didn’t require specific platform overhauls. Still, legal experts told Misryoum newsroom the verdict could pressure companies to rethink app design and content delivery to reduce future liability. That might include revisiting recommendation algorithms, limiting screen time, adding warnings for children and their parents, and tightening age verification.
