Texas Democratic Sheriff Backs Republican Ken Paxton, Blasts Talarico

Brooks County Sheriff Benny Martinez, a lifelong Democrat serving a critical frontline jurisdiction in South Texas, has broken with his party to endorse Republican Ken Paxton in his bid for the U.S. Senate, while launching a sharp critique of Democratic state legislative positions on border security and law enforcement.

In a newly released political advertisement backing Paxton, Sheriff Martinez targets the legislative record of James Talarico, focusing heavily on issues of crime and border enforcement. Within the ad, Martinez asserts that Talarico voted against legislative measures aimed at cracking down on drug cartels, opposed tougher sentencing guidelines for human traffickers, and supported policies that would allow violent offenders to be released without posting bail. Martinez concludes in the spot that Talarico’s platform advances a liberal crime agenda that compromises community protection.

Elected as sheriff in 2016 following a retirement from the Texas Department of Public Safety and a subsequent stint as chief deputy, Martinez oversees a jurisdiction uniquely shaped by immigration enforcement. Brooks County sits roughly 80 miles north of the Texas-Mexico border, yet it functions as a critical nexus in regional human smuggling and illegal immigration routes. Because the U.S. Border Patrol maintains an interior immigration checkpoint centrally located within the county, cartel-connected smugglers frequently drop off migrants on sprawling ranches south of the checkpoint, directing them to hike through harsh terrain to reach roadways in the county’s northern sector. This treacherous journey has historically resulted in the deaths of thousands of migrants who were abandoned by smugglers.

Reflecting on his frontline experience, Martinez noted that during the administration of President Donald Trump, the discovery of migrant bodies and human remains dropped by more than 90 percent when border restrictions were tightened. Alongside his endorsement of Paxton, Martinez announced his support for Republican Governor Greg Abbott in his political race against Democrat Gina Hinojosa, praising the governor for backing local law enforcement and supplying necessary resources during unprecedented challenges.

Martinez acknowledged that his public cross-party endorsements have drawn considerable negative feedback and friction from fellow Democrats. However, he maintains that his primary obligation rests with his constituents and the safety of his county. During his tenure as sheriff, he stated that not a single Democratic official visited his office or inquired about how they could assist with the ongoing crisis, whereas Republican leaders consistently stepped forward to provide support.

Emphasizing the stakes of the regional security debate for communities outside the immediate border zone, Martinez warned in his campaign ad that individuals passing through his jurisdiction eventually move further inland. As debates over federal and state immigration policies persist, the sheriff’s alignments highlight deepening divisions between local law enforcement officials in frontline regions and the broader priorities of the national Democratic platform, placing border security at the forefront of the upcoming Senate race.
