Indian Opposition Stages Massive New Delhi Rally Against Modi Government

Tens of thousands of demonstrators converged on central New Delhi on Sunday, transforming the heart of the Indian capital into a massive display of opposition against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
The demonstration, organized by a coalition of centrist and left-wing opposition parties, ranks among the largest protests directed at Mr. Modi since he assumed power more than a decade ago. Despite the immense crowd size, the gathering proceeded peacefully, avoiding the violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces that have characterized other recent political unrest in the country.
Thousands of participants lined the streets of central New Delhi amid a cacophony of banging drums, rhythmic chants, and billowing Indian flags. Inside the gates of the Ramlila Ground rally venue, tens of thousands more packed the field under the intense afternoon sun. The primary grievance driving the massive turnout was the government’s handling of an ongoing update to the nation’s voter registration lists, a controversial administrative process that has resulted in the expunging of more than 130 million names.
Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition Congress party in the lower house of Parliament and a prominent figure in India’s political landscape, delivered a scathing rebuke of the administration. Addressing the sea of supporters, Mr. Gandhi accused the government of committing treason against Indian democracy.
“You have stolen the conscience of India,” Mr. Gandhi declared to the crowd, while reiterating demands from opposition leaders and protesters that the chief elections commissioner, appointed by Mr. Modi, step down from office.
Pointing toward the assembled masses, Mr. Gandhi sought to encourage the demonstrators by emphasizing the weight of their numbers. “You are here to send a message to Narendra Modi,” he said, “and you did it.”
