Tenerife Forward Jesus de Miguel Dies After On-Field Collision

The football world is in mourning following the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, who passed away after suffering an on-field collision during a Spanish second division match.
The incident occurred during a La Liga 2 fixture between Tenerife and visiting Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez. The match stood at a 2-2 draw seven minutes into added time at the end of the game when the tragedy unfolded.
The ball had been cleared from the Tenerife penalty area and bounced toward midfield. The 30-year-old de Miguel, who had entered the match as a substitute in the 59th minute while his side held a 2-0 lead, contested the loose ball with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono. During the challenge, the goalkeeper’s knee appeared to strike de Miguel in the chest.

Owono was immediately shown a red card by the referee as players frantically gestured for medical staff to rush onto the pitch and tend to the fallen player. The match was abandoned shortly thereafter as distressed players wept on the field. Spanish media reported that de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest inside an ambulance while being transported to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, where he was subsequently admitted to the intensive care unit.
Tenerife released an official statement on Tuesday morning confirming the tragic news. “Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe that this is true, we communicate the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda,” the club said. “There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing to mitigate this feeling full of sadness. We are with his devastated family, with his loved ones, with all the people of Tenerife who today mourn this cruel outcome.”
The club added that the player’s family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the public while requesting privacy during what they described as terrible moments.
Born in Madrid, de Miguel began his senior career making his debut in 2015 with Leganes B and subsequently represented eight other clubs across Spain. He joined Tenerife on a three-year contract in 2025. Prior to that move, he made his professional debut with Castellon in August 2024 at the age of 27, following a standout 2023-2024 campaign in which he scored 16 goals to help lead his team to promotion into the second division.
