Funeral Scheduled for Olympic Runner Ciara Mageean in County Down

The funeral service for celebrated Irish Olympian and European 1500m champion Ciara Mageean is set to take place on Tuesday in her County Down hometown. Mageean, who passed away on Sunday surrounded by her family, will be remembered in a service at St Patrick’s Church in Portaferry at 2:00 pm.
Mageean built a remarkable athletic legacy, competing on the global stage at both the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Her career reached a historic milestone in 2024 when she captured the gold medal in the 1500m event at the European Championships in Rome. With that victory, she became only the second athlete in history, following Sonia O’Sullivan, to secure an individual European title for Ireland.
Away from the track, the athlete faced profound personal challenges in her final years. In 2025, she publicly shared that she had been diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer, receiving a likely terminal prognosis. Demonstrating resilience and grace, she married her longtime partner, Thomas Moran, during a ceremony in County Louth just weeks prior to her passing.
Following the announcement of her death, a widespread outpouring of grief and respect emerged from across the island of Ireland. Leaders and sports figures alike shared their sorrow and honored her athletic contributions. President Catherine Connolly was among the prominent figures offering formal praise for Mageean’s achievements and expressing deep sadness over her untimely death.
Tributes also flowed from fellow competitors across the sporting community. Republic of Ireland football captain Katie McCabe joined other athletes in remembering the former European champion runner, highlighting the profound impact Mageean made both as a fierce competitor and as a figure in Irish sport.
