Supreme Court verdict: Saraki urges PDP unity for 2027 bid

Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki says the Supreme Court’s PDP ruling should prompt immediate party unity and a focused campaign for 2027.

A Supreme Court verdict has become the focal point for fresh calls within the Peoples Democratic Party as Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki urged elected leaders to treat it as a turning point.

Saraki, speaking through Yusuph Olaniyonu of the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media Office, said the ruling should push PDP leadership elected during the party’s March 29, 2026 national convention to begin the work of uniting and preparing to win the 2027 election for all its candidates.. He framed the decision as something the party must act on immediately rather than remain stuck in the aftermath.

At the heart of Saraki’s message is the idea that the court outcome effectively leaves PDP with one clear leadership structure to rally around.

He argued that the controversy began with what he described as an avoidable choice: the national convention in Ibadan, which he said he consistently opposed from the start of the dispute.. According to Saraki, holding on to litigation longer than necessary risked making reconciliation harder, and he reiterated that the party should have moved toward an interim arrangement.

In his statement, Saraki referenced how the legal dispute has now run its full course, describing the apex court’s position that the Ibadan convention and actions connected to it are null and void.. He added that the Supreme Court also confirmed the Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara-led National Working Committee as the recognised leadership of the party under both law and the regulatory role of INEC.

This matters because internal divisions can drain time and resources, and the Supreme Court’s clarity can be used to reset decision-making inside the party.

Saraki said the party should shift attention away from questions of who gained and who lost in court.. He urged those who challenged the process to return and focus on rebuilding PDP into a stronger platform for members and potential supporters who want to pursue political ambitions, serve the public, and promote good governance.

He also suggested a broader political contrast, saying other opposition parties are still dealing with disputes that could affect their ability to participate in the 2027 elections. In that context, he said PDP should treat its own cleared path as an advantage and move with urgency.

Saraki concluded by congratulating the NWC members on what he described as victory in the legal outcome and urged them to prioritise building a united party.. He called for discipline, adherence to the rule of law, commitment to democratic principles, national development, and ultimately success in the 2027 polls.

The immediate takeaway is that Saraki is urging a shift from courtroom strategy to organisational rebuilding, because the next phase will be decided by coordination and public appeal rather than legal arguments.
