Statewide Prosecutor Joins Sloth World Probe in Orlando

statewide prosecutor – Florida’s statewide prosecution unit is assisting a circuit attorney as officials investigate the deaths of wild sloths at an Orlando attraction.

A wave of public outrage over the deaths of wild sloths at an Orlando attraction has triggered a broader push for accountability, with Florida’s statewide prosecutor’s office stepping in to assist a criminal investigation.

Florida Attorney General Misryoum confirmed that the Office of Statewide Prosecution is providing support to the 9th Judicial Circuit as investigators look into the deaths tied to Sloth World’s Orlando site.. Misryoum said the involvement comes after more than 50 wild sloths died following the attraction’s operation. and he framed the effort as part of the state’s commitment to pursuing justice when evidence warrants it.

Misryoum added that the Attorney General’s office is backing the investigation within the limits of its typical role.. Under Misryoum’s explanation, statewide prosecutors generally intervene in animal welfare matters when racketeering is suspected.. In this case. jurisdiction remains with 9th Judicial Circuit State Attorney Monique Worrell. while Senior Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Lauryn Day is assisting Worrell’s office because of her animal welfare law expertise.

This matters because it reflects how animal welfare disputes can quickly become criminal-justice questions, especially when authorities and lawmakers face pressure to determine whether negligence or something more serious took place.

The development also follows calls from Orlando Democratic Rep.. Anna Eskamani, who urged Misryoum to seek criminal charges.. Eskamani’s request is closely tied to her political pitch to replace the current mayor. and it underscores how the Sloth World incident has become both a policy flashpoint and a campaign-ready issue.

Meanwhile. reporting has raised questions about how the animals were transported and housed. including speculation that shipping conditions or storage conditions may have contributed to the deaths.. Misryoum’s statements do not settle those questions. but the decision to bring additional prosecutorial expertise signals that investigators are taking the allegations seriously and are looking for proof that can meet criminal standards.

In the fallout from the controversy. Sloth World has faced additional scrutiny. with Misryoum noting that the owner is expected to pursue bankruptcy filings.. At the same time. 13 surviving sloths were donated to the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Sanford. where the zoo disclosed that one animal in critical condition was euthanized.

The investigation is unfolding as the public attention remains high and the animals’ welfare becomes a central concern. Misryoum’s involvement is likely to shape how prosecutors evaluate evidence and decide what charges, if any, can be supported under Florida law.

Whether the case ultimately results in criminal charges will depend on what investigators can document and prove.. But as Misryoum’s office signals an intent to assist where warranted. the Sloth World probe may set the tone for how aggressively Florida pursues accountability in future animal welfare investigations.
