A subtle change on convenience-store shelves in Japan is drawing attention far beyond the snack aisle: some popular Calbee products are turning from colorful packaging to stark black-and-white.

The shift is already affecting consumer perception even though the company says the food inside remains unchanged.. Calbee Inc.. which makes potato chips and cereal and sells widely across Japan’s omnipresent convenience stores. said the packaging change is meant to preserve a stable supply of its products while upstream material shortages are resolved.

Calbee said it is implementing the change on 14 items in its lineup beginning May 25.. For those products, the company will limit colored ink to just two colors rather than the broader palette used previously.. In a statement, Calbee framed the move as a way to maintain steady operations amid rapidly changing geopolitical conditions.

The underlying reason. the company and the broader supply chain situation point to. is disruption in global shipping and energy flows connected to the war in Iran.. The report cited the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. an outcome that has contributed to higher prices for oil and other products. along with supply crunches that ripple into materials used for manufacturing and packaging.

One ingredient in the problem is linked to naphtha. an oil-related product used in a range of industrial goods. including plastics and ink.. Japan. which relies heavily on imported oil. has therefore been exposed to the downstream effects of energy and chemical shortages even when the immediate impact is not felt at the checkout counter.

For Japanese consumers, the change is visible in the packaging design itself.. Calbee’s lightly salted chips. known as “usu shio. ” previously came in a bright-orange bag featuring an image of yellow chips and a potato-man mascot wearing a hat.. The updated version, the report said, uses monochrome lettering instead.

Calbee also produces shrimp chips known as “kappa ebisen,” which is among the affected products. The company’s decision adds to a pattern in which shortages and price swings are increasingly influencing not just availability but the way consumer goods are presented in retail settings.

At the corporate level, the change comes as Calbee pursues growth. The company recently announced an ambitious growth strategy in March, and its latest packaging adjustment reflects how long-term expansion plans can collide with short-term resource constraints when global supply lines tighten.

Calbee. founded in 1949 and employing more than 5. 000 group workers. said it does not yet know how long the packaging modification will last.. The company’s position is that it must remain flexible. adjusting to shifting conditions rather than relying on a return to normal timelines that may not materialize quickly.

The report also highlighted why Japan has been trying to limit anxiety about the broader energy picture.. The Japanese government has sought to allay concerns by pointing to the country’s oil reserves. which may help buffer some aspects of disruption even as related industrial supplies. like ink inputs. become harder to source.

In its statement. Calbee said it would continue responding promptly to changes in its operating environment. including geopolitical risks. while staying committed to maintaining a stable supply of safe. high-quality products.. The company asked customers for understanding as it makes what may seem like a purely cosmetic shift—one that. in practice. signals how closely consumer life can be tethered to distant conflicts.
