The Sombrero Galaxy, Messier 104, has long been a favorite target for amateur observers—but fresh, ultra-high-resolution images bring its biggest features into sharper focus.

Using the 570-megapixel Dark Energy Camera mounted on the Victor M.. Blanco 4-meter Telescope in Chile, astronomers captured new views of Messier 104 that highlight details usually hidden in less sensitive data.. The galaxy sits roughly 30 million light-years away in the Virgo constellation. and from Earth it appears almost perfectly disk-like. punctuated by a towering central bulge that earned it the “sombrero” nickname.

In these new images. the galaxy’s bright core stands out surrounded by thousands of globular star clusters—dense. ancient groupings of stars bound by gravity.. The contrast is striking: the center glows intensely. while the outer disk dims. drawing attention to the galaxy’s structure as a layered system rather than a single flat silhouette.

A key new emphasis is the behavior of material along the disk’s rim.. Darker regions trace a dust lane made of space dust and hydrogen that has accumulated at the galaxy’s perimeter.. At about 50,000 light-years across, Messier 104 also hosts a supermassive black hole at its center.. More formal catalog inclusion came in 1921 after later verification..
