SNP Leads Scotland Vote, Set for Minority Holyrood

SNP minority – The SNP is poised to regain the top spot in Holyrood but falls short of a majority as results continue to be counted.

Scotland’s election count is starting to settle into a familiar pattern: the SNP is in the lead, yet the prospect of an outright majority in Holyrood remains out of reach.

As results continue to be declared across almost all constituencies. John Swinney’s party is on course to become Holyrood’s largest party once again.. But the independence-focused strategy Swinney pinned on reaching at least 65 seats appears to be landing in a different outcome. with a minority administration now the most likely scenario rather than a parliamentary majority.

The SNP has won up to 55 seats so far. including a landmark gain in Shetland. where it took the constituency from the Liberal Democrats for the first time.. The party has. however. also recorded setbacks that will shape coalition arithmetic—Western Isles has gone to Labour. Strathkelvin and Bearsden were won by the Liberal Democrats. and Angus Robertson lost his bid to Lorna Slater of the Scottish Greens in Edinburgh Central.

In this context. the result mix suggests the SNP’s lead may come with greater reliance on negotiation than outright control.. While Swinney had projected confidence early in the day. the continuing distribution of seats underscores how quickly a governing plan can become less certain when other parties make visible gains in key constituencies.

Labour’s vote share remained a point of discussion as Anas Sarwar conceded earlier that his party had lost the election early in the day. Still, there were pockets of relief for Labour supporters, including in Dumbarton where deputy leader Jackie Baillie doubled her majority to around 2,000 votes.

Other constituency outcomes point to a shifting balance.. Kaukab Stewart’s attempt to win Nicola Sturgeon’s vacant Glasgow Southside seat fell short. with the constituency going instead to local Green councillor Holly Bruce.. The Scottish Greens have secured constituency wins for the first time. while Reform UK has not matched that breakthrough so far.

With some results still outstanding, the seat picture being reported places the Liberal Democrats as the second-largest party on five seats. The Conservatives hold four seats, Labour has three, and the Greens have two—figures that could still change as the remaining regions come in.

Beyond the core battle for seats. the SNP’s performance is being closely watched in places that have defined its recent identity.. The party has continued to dominate in “Yes city” Dundee, where it won both city seats.. It has also seen its Westminster leader Stephen Flynn win entry to the Scottish Parliament in Aberdeen Deeside and North Kincardine.

The election follows nearly two decades in power, during which the SNP’s track record has faced mounting scrutiny.. Swinney. who is fighting the first Scottish Parliament election since taking over as leader of the party in 2024. promised to unify the SNP after internal divisions and to restore government focus to delivery.

Swinney’s rise to leadership came shortly before the 2024 general election, in which the SNP’s group of MPs was reduced to nine. As the results unfolded this time, Swinney said the emerging numbers were a reflection of work to rebuild public confidence and trust in the SNP.

On the political right, Reform UK’s Malcolm Offord expressed disappointment that his party had not captured a constituency seat. Offord stood in Inverclyde, which was won by the SNP’s Stuart MacMillan, who is also the Scottish Parliament piper.

If the current count holds. the election’s central storyline will shift from “SNP comeback” to “SNP governs without a majority.” Even a clear lead in seats can still mean limited room for maneuver in Holyrood—making negotiations. policy compromises. and alliances likely to be central in the next phase of Scotland’s political calendar. with results still due to land.

At Misryoum, the developments in the continuing count will be closely followed as remaining results are announced and the final shape of governance comes into focus.
