Skowhegan baseball edges Brewer 7-6 on Wednesday

Skowhegan scraped past Brewer 7-6 as Blake Kenyon fueled the win. Elsewhere, Oxford Hills, Leavitt, and Monmouth Academy posted big victories in high school action.
High school baseball brought plenty of close finishes and a few blowouts on Wednesday, with several teams setting the tone early in the season.
The headline game had Skowhegan squeezing out a 7-6 win over Brewer in Brewer.. Blake Kenyon was central to the River Hawks’ offense, doubling and adding three singles while also driving in two runs.. Trevor Austin matched that production with two RBI, and both Trevor Austin and Trent Austin chipped in with doubles as Skowhegan improved its chances late.. For Brewer, the Witches’ attack came from Ayden Barnard, who collected three hits and an RBI, while Joshua McGovern added three singles and two more runs driven in.. Cody Hews also contributed with a double and a run.
That kind of one-run game doesn’t just test a team’s hitting—it puts pressure on every at-bat and every defensive decision.. In a matchup decided by a single swing of momentum, the difference often comes down to which side manages to bring runners home when the inning tightens, and Skowhegan managed to do just enough.
Oxford Hills kept rolling with an 11-1, five-inning victory over Mt.. Blue in Paris.. The Vikings jumped out early, with Colton Jendrick, Cameron Pulkkinen, and Finley Cavers driving in two runs each.. Jendrick doubled and scored four times, while Pulkkinen and Cavers added two hits apiece.. Ryder Kennison also recorded a double for Oxford Hills.. Mt.. Blue’s Oliver Cormier started the game with a home run—his first swing setting the tone—yet it was the only hit and run allowed by Vikings pitchers Tucker Hilden, who struck out five in 3 1/3 innings, along with Niko Powers and Logan Norris.
Leavitt struck for 11 runs to beat Erskine Academy 11-4 in South China.. Hailey Cyr, Charlee Pelletier, and Cayleigh Rose each posted two hits to lead the Hornets.. Cyr struck out six to earn the win, while Lilly Clark and Kammie Thompson each produced three hits for Erskine.. Clark and Faith MacMaster both had a double for the Eagles, adding extra-base pop despite the larger gap in the final score.
Monmouth Academy didn’t need extra innings to make its statement, routing Maranacook 15-3 in five innings.. Evelyn Pettengill powered the unbeaten Mustangs with nine strikeouts, two extra-base hits, and multiple contributions at the plate.. She doubled and tripled, drove in two runs, and scored twice.. Lila Poussard and Kaitlyn Frost also had two hits for Monmouth, while Danika Dunn provided two of Maranacook’s five hits along with a double and a single.
Wednesday’s results reflect a familiar early-season mix: some teams are trying to find consistency in close games, while others are establishing rhythm through dominant pitching and timely hitting.. When one team continues to win in different ways—whether it’s grinding out a one-run decision or turning the game into a fast, five-inning rout—it suggests a wider base of contributions across the lineup.
For players and coaches, these games also shape what comes next.. In the one-run contest, the focus will likely shift to small execution points—situational hitting and run prevention—while teams with bigger margins, like Oxford Hills and Monmouth, can lean into what’s working: starting fast, pressing advantages, and keeping opponents from settling in.
