Shawn Langdon Sets NHRA Speed Record at 345 mph

Shawn Langdon hits 345 mph in Top Fuel qualifying, breaking the NHRA speed mark as the series debuts at a new Georgia track.

A Top Fuel pass at 345 mph just redefined what “fast” means in drag racing.

Shawn Langdon broke the NHRA speed record Friday, reaching 345.00 mph during a qualifying run at South Georgia Motorsports Park. The performance also captured a milestone over the previous speed benchmark of 343.51 mph set by Brittany Force.

Langdon covered the 1,000-foot track in 3.724 seconds, delivering a run that comes after he and his team had already shown impressive speed during preseason testing. Entering the weekend, he was positioned second in points, trailing only Doug Kalitta after four events.

In this context, records like this matter because they represent a moving line in a sport where fractions of a second are built on engineering, conditions, and precision. When a driver clears that line in qualifying, it changes expectations for everyone watching the rest of the field.

The record-breaking run also arrived during the NHRA’s debut at the newest stop on its 20-race schedule. Langdon credited his team for making the effort count, describing the accomplishment as meaningful for the people working to translate testing results into the season.

Tony Stewart, racing his third full season in NHRA’s top division, placed second in qualifying with a 3.758-second run at 334.40 mph. With multiple high-speed runs already showing up this weekend, the competition is shaping up as more than just a headline race.

Meanwhile, the bigger storyline for NHRA fans is the series’ continued growth. The NHRA has added two new tracks to the 2026 schedule, with South Georgia Motorsports Park among the first to host the tour.

For viewers, this is the kind of moment that sits at the intersection of sport and spectacle: a new venue, record-level speed, and a packed national spotlight that helps determine which storylines carry through the season. In short, the record is only part of why the weekend feels important.
